Manhattan Mixology Masters Bring Cocktails to Kolo Klub
Hoboken, NJ – July 2012 - Pilsener Haus & Biergarten owners Andrej Ivanov and Ladislav Sebestyan are proud to announce that acclaimed barmen Michael Neff and Kenneth McCoy, proprietors of Ward III and The Rum House, will be consulting on the opening cocktail program for Kolo Klub, the craftsman-built loft space on the second floor of 1422 Grand Street in Hoboken (www.koloklub.com, 201-683-5465). Cocktails at Kolo Klub will introduce Hoboken to a level of mixology perfection heretofore untasted within its square-mile borders. On Friday and Saturday nights til 2:00am, guests can savor a menu of artisanal libations and small bites in a stunning salon setting.
Pilsener Haus’ Andy Ivanov was one of the founders of Brooklyn’s Radegast Hall, which sparked the biergarten trend in the New York metropolitan area. At Pilsener Haus, Andy and partner Ladi brought the authentic biergarten experience to New Jersey. For Kolo Klub, the pair enlisted Michael and Kenneth to ensure that the loft would not just be “a damn fine bar”, but the first of its kind in Hoboken—a serious space for enjoying expertly handcrafted cocktails. Says Andy, “The experience of drinking a perfect cocktail in a really cool room is what we wanted to bring to Hoboken. Michael and Kenneth have built truly classic bars, and with their involvement we can offer that gold standard of mixology at Kolo Klub.”
Michael Neff and Kenneth McCoy are internationally renowned for the cocktails they make and the bars in which they serve them. A journeyman bartender, Michael has opened no less than ten bars in three states, and also writes a regular column about the culture of bartending for SeriousEats.com called, “From Behind The Bar”. Kenneth, a second-generation bartender/owner, has almost 20 years in the business, and has worked at some of New York’s top spirits bars. He has also earned, and defended the title of “Iron Bartender” two years in a row. Together, with their partner Abdul Tabini, they opened Tribeca’s Ward III in 2009, and a year and half later brought cocktails to Times Square at The Rum House. Michael says, “We’re thrilled to be a part of Kolo Klub. Andy and Ladi are true visionaries, and we’re honored to have been asked to lend our sensibilities and approach to hospitality to such an inspired project.” Kenneth adds, “The Pilsener Haus team’s devotion to artistry, authenticity and quality is exceptional. The scope of the space and the intricacy of its details blew us away the minute we walked in, and we immediately saw the potential for what the space could become.”
In addition to expertly made classics like the Manhattan, Old Fashioned or Dark & Stormy, some of the original Kolo Klub cocktails created by Neff and McCoy evoke the Czech heritage of the Pilsener Haus team: “kolo” means bicycle, and the whimsical rider in the logo hints at a playful sense of fun and inventiveness. The Czech Sidecar combines Czechoslovakian Becherovka liqueur, Combier, orange bitters and citrus; the Bohemian brings together Beefeater gin, St Germain and maraschino liqueur; the Prague ’36, with Zubrowka vodka, Combier, Aperol, lemon juice, and apple puree is served in a coupe and topped with sparkling wine. Prost!
Designed by Jirka Kolar Interiors, Kolo Klub evokes the feel of a turn-of-the-century salon in old world Prague when intellectual and artistic creativity was inspiring change across much of Europe. The 30-foot long bar is fronted by true divided glass panels set in hand-made metal framing and topped by metal in combination with oak. Under the arching curve of its wooden ceiling, customers can relax in a casual array of vintage leather armchairs sourced directly from Paris, or keep things cozy on one of the velvet couches. For those with a light appetite, a small menu of Austro-Hungarian bites will be offered from Pilsener Haus’ kitchen, acclaimed for its authenticity, and guests will occasionally want to put down their drinks to applaud a regular schedule of lounge performers. The team behind Kolo Klub will bring Hoboken and New Jersey the cocktail experience they’ve been thirsting for.
