A Smart Move for Ann Yuen. Plus, a 9/11 Rock Musical?

Welcome to "About Town," a new column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what the town's talking about. Check in often, because we will be updating often. And if you see something...say something

Belated congrats to Ann Yuen, who you can see tooling around town in her new Smart car. Ann won the car last week in a contest sponsored by QuickChek and 7Up. If she wants to rub it in she can also remind you that owners of the super small Smart get half price parking at Central Parking System lots in NYC and NJ.

a replacement for B&N?

Anyone have a scoop on what might take the place of Barnes & Noble in their prime retail spot on Washington?

That's just one of the things we saw prepping this very first About Town column—a quick look at the not-quite-news but still-neat happenings that occur in Hoboken all the time. Seen something wacky, wild, cute, cuddly, funny or fun? Got an incidental observation or a minor celebration? Shoot it to our editor, at clairem@patch.com. We want pictures too.

A rock musical about 9/11?

A rock musical about Sept. 11? We may take some convincing but that's the premise behind Hoboken native Al Parinello's latest venture, a movie that follows the lives of 11 New Yorkers in the aftermath of the disaster. It's being shown for free this week at his alma mater, NJCU in Jersey City, along with a Q&A with Parinello and live performances from the musical. That's Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m., at the Margaret Williams Theater of Hepburn Hall. Nice piece on Parinello here in the Hudson Reporter.

Cops appeal to council's sweet tooth

Hundreds of policemen showed up to speak up about lay offs at last week's council meeting, where council chambers were never hotter and drops of sweat formed on the foreheads of most of those present. But, the PBA did take care of the people there. After speaking in the public portion, all the cops got a bottle of water. Even better: the benevolence association provided two large boxes of canoli from Carlo's Bakery to get everyone through the night. After the police left and the regular meeting started shortly after midnight, City Clerk Jimmy Farina got a plate of chocolate canolis together for the members of the council.

LEAVE THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION?

When serial transit thief Darius McCollum was busted last week for stealing a bus from the Hoboken Trailways lot he told the cops, "Bet they won't leave the keys in the ignition" again. Well guess what? Kudos to the Daily News.

So what are we missing? Openings, closings, winners, losers or just plain strange, drop us a note, clairem@patch.com. And check back often.
