Bike Share Program Could be Coming to Hoboken

The city council was expected to discuss a new bike share pilot on Wednesday night.

A bike sharing program could be coming to Hoboken as soon as mid-May.

On Wednesday night, the City Council was expected to vote on an agreement between the city and Bike and Roll, a bike rental company in several cities across the nation, including the New York area.

The bike share program — which would roll out around the same time as the much anticipated and heavily delayed bike share program across the river in New York City — will probably bring four "hubs" where Hobokenites can get the bikes. The pilot is supposed to be for six months, if the agreement is approved on Wednesday night.

The proposed plan, which differs from the one in New York, wouldn't include docking stations for the bikes.

The bikes, rather, would be able to be parked in regular bike racks. This is a new form of bike sharing, said Melli, which isn't being done anywhere else in the country.

Apart from the bike share program, Bike & Roll will also offer regular bike rentals in Hoboken, Melli said.

The pilot program will not cost the city anything, said Spokesman Juan Melli.

Melli added that Bike & Roll has agreed to share 50 percent of the profit with the city.

More information on the proposed bike share program will follow on Hoboken Patch after the city council votes on the matter.
