Assistant Superintendent Miguel Hernandez hands out to a special award to a student who returned a $1 bill to a fellow student.
In case you weren't able to attend Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting, below is a short list of some of the issues discussed.
- The Board honored the students of the month October. From Calabro: Eashan Patel; Connors: Marissa Hernandez; Wallace: Kianna Santiago and from Hoboken High School: Jennifer Tu.
- Three members of the Entrepeneur Club presented themselves to the Board of Education, telling them that they'll be selling Hoboken items at the school and at football games. Junior Kaylah Linton, Sophomore Jasmin Rojas and senior Hector Rodriguez briefly informed the board members. Board Member Frances Rhodes Kearns bought a sweatshirt later that evening.
- Hoboken said goodbye to Athletic Director Maurice DeGennaro, who has worked for the district for 38 years. DeGennaro will be retiring and leaving the school district. "Once a Redwing, always a Redwing," DeGennaro said after thanking the board.
- The board appointed Patricia Waiters, who ran for school board earlier this year, to the Early Childhood Program Advisory Council. After some discussion about the legality of the move, Waiters was appointed, if indeed in accordance with the bylaws of the advisory council.
- Assistant Superintendent Miguel Hernandez presented the graduation rate to the board, telling them that 87 percent of Hoboken High School students graduated last school year. In total, ten students of roughly 126 students didn't graduate high school. Of the class of 2010, 67 went on to four-year colleges; 49 went on to two-year colleges, two students went to work and of six it was unclear what they went on to do. No students went into the army. Board Member Carmelo Garcia asked how the gap would be closed and how 100 percent graduation rate would be achieved. Hernandez said that, among other things, smartboards would be implemented in the curriculum.
- Teachers Rob Felicetta and Fran Cohen presented the new gifted and talented program for the school district.
- Business Administrator Robert Davis announced that the universal breakfast program has begun.
- A cafe will be opened in the Hoboken High School.
- A new school play will be performed on December 9.

The meeting is on channel 77 now, if anyone would like to view it.
Here are a few quotes:
From Mr. Davis:
"When I arrived here on Nov 18th 2009, we were in a situation where the State was weeks away from taking over the business activities of the district, 30 audit violations (many repeats), we failed district monitoring, $700,000 loss in food service, critical independent report on the transportation program, large cut in State funding for capital improvements, recent tax levy increase, 25% reduction in State Aid, freezing of Federal aid and a 2% cap, we had some very serious problems to be dealt with.
Thankfully and with the action of the BoE, we have avoided the State takeover, passed monitoring, brought food service to a self sustaining basis, now instituted a 6 year capital plan not dependant on the State Aid, two budgets in a row with a tax levy decrease, a number of other improvements...thanks to the BoE and past two Superintendents.
Theresa Minutillo noted:
in context of programs, we see new tech in our classrooms, new science kits, new text books, new curriculums being implemented. None of that would be possible. The money to support those programs, the funds would not be possible today, if were not for Mr. Davis running such an efficient department."

There is no evidence or proof that the State was going to "take over" the school district because of finances. It is simply a lie. It's part of a revisionist history trying to be established as election time rolls around--

Are you kidding me? We need an better blackboard so kids can graduate high school? Where did they find this guy? Epic failure.
The people who hired this guy also had the brilliant idea of appointing Pat Waiters to advise them on early childhood issues. You can't make this stuff up.

Amen PP. This spring is crunch time. Do we go back to the days that Davis, Carter, et al saved us from or back to the dark days where patronage and manipulation was order of the day,

If smartboards were the answer to improving graduation rates, then wouldn't that be reflected all over the country? Before the existance of technology, did the US only graduate 60% of its high school seniors? Why does everyone think technology is the answer the ills of education in America? The bottom line is a lot of money has been made by infusing schools with technology..."buy this to improve your fill-in-the-blank!". Public education is a money grab. Yes I believe in public education but the money grab aspect is nauseating. There's always people looking to line their pockets in the name of "do it for the kids".

You should have taken the tour. The Smart Boards were off the charts impressive. Like any other tool it's what you do with the technology. There are lot's of amazing computers too. I'll be more comprehensive next week. There are other items besides technology that also impressed me.

Scott Siegel souds like George Bush when he was shown a supermarket scanner. Not to mention that there's something really creepy about a single guy with no children who is not an educator checking out the high school with such interest.

So I can't attend BOE meetings either? You seem to be afraid of what a concerned citizen can accomplish.

Passkey you have lied about your job, prove Davis a liar and I'll accept it. Otherwise I believe him over you every time.
