'Cake Boss' Recap: It's Train Day and Someone Retires

What you missed on this week's episode of 'Cake Boss.'

Last night's episode begins with a surprise from Buddy. It's a train, but, like all middle-aged man, he calls it a "choo choo." He explains that National Train Day is coming up and he's been commissioned to create a cake in celebration. People will celebrate anything these days.

Gail from Amtrak and Doug from Bachmann Trains came to him to speak about the cake, and it was discussed that there must be trains running through this cake for it to meet specific standards. It's like if you're having a birthday party, and if the cake doesn't have your name on it, it's not really your birthday cake.

The words choo choo were just uttered again. I can only pray Buddy will hold back for the remainder of the episode. It's been only about four minutes, and there's already been two of these.

Buddy plans for a patriotic cityscape cake. I'm sure after the giant concoction that was the St. Louis cake, this will be simple pimple. Doug says his company will provide them with the baseboard for the cake to make sure the specifications are there for the train.

Everyone's helping out with this train cake. It's very busy, and the cake requires incredible attention to detail, but now it's time for lunch. Because of Mauro's recent health problems, he is required to start exercising and change his diet. He now has to eat salads. And because this is not only a team but a family everyone else must eat a salad too. No one is happy about this.

Mauro's adorable son comes over to take him for a walk. That's so sweet. And when they leave, something less sweet and oilier happens: The boys (presumably Buddy does not partake, because he could stand to lose a couple of pounds) order a pizza.

So apparently Joey is a fireman. In addition to making cakes, he puts out fires. He's here today in his fireman get-up to ask Buddy to make a cake for his captain who is "packing it in." Of course Buddy will do it. His sense of civic duty is shadowed only by his love for cakes.

So, problem: the board Doug sent over for the train cake is too big–as in, too big to fit through the doors and in the van. So no one is quite sure how they're going to transport this. Buddy decides to call Amtrak Gail who offers nothing that sounds like help. The show must go on.

Bigger cake means more buildings and accessories made of fondant and molding sweets. If everyone was already working on it and now more has to be made and there's still the fireman cake for Joey's captain, there's just too much going on in this place. Speaking of, Joey, who doesn't normally decorate the cakes (for reasons unbeknownst to viewers), is actually working on making the ax ornament, because this is a personal project. How touching.

This cake is going to be bigger than Mauro, so there's really enough space for everyone. And when there's not enough space anywhere (like at the Lana Lounge, for example), it's only natural that two big men will inadvertently rub butts accidentally. And when such an unfortunate event happens, it's expected that the two will bicker about it. If it happens at Lana's, it'll happen at Carlo's. That's exactly how it went down between Frankie and Danny.

Buddy and Joey go to Harrison to deliver the cake to Captain Bob. But they're not alone. A bagpiper accompanies them. It's not quite enough to have your retirement televised and celebrated with a custom-made cake, because it won't be complete unless someone in a kilt provides musical entertainment.

What will they give Buddy when he retires? Who's going to make that cake?

It's going to take two trucks to transport the entire hugeness that is the train cake. The crew is even taking machines with them so the cake can be assembled in Penn Station.

There is a giant platform for the giant cake. And the guys start putting the whole thing together, and as it nears completion it starts to look like that fantasy world where if you're ever hungry and you're walking around your city, you can take a bite off the chair bench or the tourist who decided to stop in the middle of the street, because they saw something shiny that they've never seen before. I'm pretty sure everyone has had this fantasy. Well if not, the cake is that fantasy come to life.

So everyone leaves to take a break before the big reveal. Joey and Anthony come in to check out the cake only to find out that it's falling apart. Pieces of the cake are crumbling down. Joey calls Buddy who says he'll be there soon, ostensibly to fix the cake, but then Joey fixes it on his own. I mean what if there was a fire that needed to be put out. We can't be having joey fixing broken cakes, Buddy!

And thus Buddy, once the cake was revamped by just doing away with the building that collapsed like it was part of a disaster flick, introduces and unveils the giant cake. The crowd goes nuts. But that's not all. There's still the party trick! I don't know what the word is for what people do when they've already gone nuts, and they need to go bigger, but that's essentially what happens when the trains start running around the cake. And the crowd goes nuts-ser!

The fireman that retired is my cousin, Bobby Gerris! And trust me - it doesn't matter if it's a retirement, a wedding or a funeral - there's always a bagpiper at Harrison family affairs.
