Cake Boss Surfs a High Tide
Here's what you missed on Monday night's new episode.
As the latest episode of Cake Boss opens, Buddy meets with a husband and wife, Dave and Ruth. Ruth is pregnant, and she and Dave want to throw what they call a “gender reveal” party. Apparently these parties are all the rage nowadays.
They're going to send the results of the gender test to Buddy, who then will bake the inside of the cake with either blue or pink sponge. Dave and Ruth will find out what they're getting when they cut into the cake. “That's pretty cool,” Buddy says.
Buddy designs a cake of a baby's bottom. “You know, when you're looking at a baby's butt, in the diaper, you can't tell if it's a boy or a girl,” he says. True, but you don't have to look far to find out.
Buddy also meets with a woman named Alex, who is the general manager of Tide, the famous detergent line. She wants a cake to celebrate the brand's 65th anniversary.
“I've never washed clothes in my life,” Buddy says. “If you put me in front of a washing machine I wouldn't even know how to turn it on.” He says it's because his mother and wife have always washed his clothes. But Buddy, it's 2011. It's okay for guys to know how to do household chores.
Buddy offers to build a cake that looks like an old-fashioned washing machine. “You know they spin, right?” Alex asks. Buddy just talked himself into a complicated job, but he's going to find a way to handle it.
Back at Carlo's, Ruth returns and gives Buddy the envelope. He looks at the ultrasound photo. It looks like a Dali painting. “I really have no clue what I'm looking at,” Buddy says. Then two seconds later he reads at the top of the photo where the doctor has written, “it's a girl.” Great. It could have gotten awkward to watch him trying to figure this one out.
Buddy admits he was wrong. “Boy or girl, it's all good stuff,” he says. Especially when boy knows girl will still do his laundry for him 35 years later.
The washing machine cake is coming along. It's on a turntable so it spins. It's also going to have some bubbles for special effects.
Buddy also finishes the gender reveal cake and delivers it to Ruth and Dave's house. They cut into it and see the pink. Dave wanted a boy but is still happy to have a girl. “I'm really looking forward to her being here,” he says.
“The boys will come in, don't worry about it,” Buddy tells him. And, now Dave has someone else to handle the laundry.
The washing machine cake is done too. It spins, with bubbles, and has a bottle of tide tilted over so that the detergent is pouring into the machine.
Buddy wheels it into the party Tide is throwing. Everyone loves it. “If I knew doing laundry with bubbles and stuff was this fun, I might actually do it,” Buddy says.
“My first reaction was, 'wow, he really pulled it off,'" Alex says.
With his work done, Buddy returns to Lackawanna to have a meeting with the family. He's got some big news to tell them.
Buddy stands next to Lisa and talks to his sisters. He reveals the big secret about how he and Lisa are going to renew their vows.
“We're going on a cruise, and we're going to get remarried on a beach in the Bahamas,” he says.
Everyone says that's nice. Then Buddy tells them that he's taking them on the cruise too, and they go nuts.
So it looks like the Valastros are going to need some beach clothes soon. And after the cruise, Buddy's wife and sisters can enjoy washing them. After all, boys don't do laundry.
