Chicken Galore Comes Back to Hoboken

The landmark restaurant, formerly near 6th Street, has relocated to 15th after a long absence.

For those of you who have been waiting, Chicken Galore is back in Hoboken. The restaurant, which was formerly located on Sixth and Washington Streets, has reopened after a ten year absence at its new home, 363 15th Street.

New owner Bobby Gonzalez worked at the original Hoboken location, which opened in 1964. The previous owner decided to close there due to increasing costs.

Gonzalez bought the franchise from the previous owner, and has maintained the other Chicken Galore location in Union City. But Gonzalez, a Hoboken native, said he always wanted to return to Hoboken.

“People have been asking us for years, when are you coming back to Hoboken,” he said.

The restaurant has dine-in seating, which features two flat screen televisions, as well as carryout and delivery service. The menu includes several different meals featuring chicken – both rotisserie and fried – or fish and ribs, plus breakfast. Customers can choose from combo servings or order items separately.

Gonzalez said the new location is more accessible to customers than the previous one due to less congestion in the area.

“The parking is great. There's no headaches here like on Washington Street,” he said.

He also hopes the restaurant can cater to nearby businesses, including the Academy Bus depot.

“The workers had no place to go before, but now they can come here in the morning,” Gonzalez said. As part of its breakfast menu, the Chicken Galore also serves coffee.

Gonzalez operates the restaurant with a half dozen employees, not including delivery drivers, who are supplied through a contractor.

Chicken Galore is open Sunday through Wednesday between 6am and midnight, and Thursday through Saturday between 6am and 3am.

Coming soon: a head shop descends on First Street.

I'm laughing over the link to the head shop after this story. Reminds me of my old room-mate (in the 90s') and his frequent ordering of Chicken Galore to combat his munchies.
