City: 36 layoffs to save $2.5 million
Plans calls for 18 city layoffs and 18 police layoffs, plus demotions
Mayor Dawn Zimmer will unveil a municipal layoff plan today at 2 p.m. that calls for 36 layoffs and 19 demotions, according to a city press release.
The police force will be reduced by 18 after the demotion of 19 superior officers. The move is intended to increase foot patrols while reducing what has been found to be a top-heavy department by a state auditor.
Another 18 municipal employees will be laid off in unspecified positions.
As far as the police department is concerned, the Table of Organization will be adjusted as followed, according to the release:
The City's proposed demotions reflect the DLGS audit which recommended that the superior officer structure be modified from 1 Chief, 4 Captains, 18 Lieutenants and 30 Sergeants to 1 Chief, 3 Captains, 12 Lieutenants and 26 Sergeants.
More on the layoffs and demotions after Zimmer's 2 p.m. press conference.
