City Hires New Directors

A new public safety director was appointed, as well as an acting environmental services director.

A new public safety director has been hired for the city of Hoboken and has started working over the weekend .

Jon Tooke, who used to work for the Jersey City Police Department for 30 years, will be the new director of public safety, according to the city.

Tooke's proposed salary is $110,000 per year, according to spokesman Juan Melli.

The mayor has also announced she is appointing a new acting environmental services director. Leslie Shenkler will take that job,

Melli said Shenkler will be making $85 per hour in his acting capacity.

The appointments will have go before the city council.

Former public safety director Angel Alicea Dwek was the informant in Operation Bid Rig, a sting operation that brought down former mayor Peter Cammarano and many other New Jersey officials.

Alicea, a retired Union City cop, earned $27,500. As of 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, it was still unclear how much the new director would earn.

determined that the position of public safety officer in Hoboken could possibly be eliminated. The public safety officer is supposed to be the link between City Hall and the police department.
