Frank, i think you got a problem- people know that you guys told the marine view, church towers 4/4 and 4/3 to vote no on the rent control but sent out flyers for the uptown yups to vote Yes for the rent control question. Claire, you have seen the campaign finance reports. The only time the absentee ballots sway the election one way or the other is when the candidate who gets a disproportionate number starts paying people. It isn't the absentee ballots that influence the outcome, it is the money paid to voters. And it is past time journalists start reporting on this disgusting practice.

Well, this was a Presidential election, so a good number of the absentee ballots are probably legitimate and may not even contain votes for the BOE. If the percentage of absentee ballots that have BOE votes is substantially higher than on the machines, then something fishy might be going on. I wonder how many absentee ballots came in after the deadline for Presidential voting. Those might be the bulk of BOE voting.

Zimmer's Kids First group first introduces "live agenda items" to keep things from the public (like voting for a superintendent), then takes the right to vote on the budget away from the public, then they vote to extend their terms, then they vote to move the elections. Seems like there's enough disgusting practices to go around. Also, keep in mind, the State of New Jersey encourages people to vote by mail. Only in Hoboken is voting by mail seen as some horrendous act. Why? Because the so called "reformers" can't control it and don't have the feet on the ground troops to make sure the vote gets out. What the reformers can't control they try to discredit, intimidate, or insinuate with illegalities. Ridiculous.

Curious was wrong when she said we don't have November elections every year but she is right when she says there is nothing wrong with absentee ballots. There is however something wrong with paying for votes however they are cast. About 1000 people who vote for move forward mostly by absentee will also be paid $50 or so to "work."Curious don't you think?

I would like to see greater restriction on absentee voting criteria. I think early voting is a disgrace to what America and our brand of democracy stands for, and I would like to see the first Tuesday in November declared a federal holiday.

There is absolutely no reason why a vast majority of Americans cant pull themselves away and get themselves to their polling stations to cast their votes.

At the risk of being repetative, the problem isn't early voting, absentee voting or electronic voting. The problem is corrupt politicians and machines paying other people for their votes. In Hoboken, Mason, Raia and Cammarano spent fortunes "hiring" voters for $40 who magically voted for them, often by absentee ballot delivered by the voter to campaign operatives rather than to the Board of Elections.

There are only two ways to address the problem. Plan A would be for the AG to vigorously enforce existing law and throw the perps in jail. Unfortunately that's not gonna happen.

Plan B is to outvote them and that means making voting aseasy aspossible for non cheaters. Early voting, VBM, electronic voting - we need to allow it all. Thereare 1000 votes for sale in Hoboken. If 5,000 people vote that's 20% of the vote. If 10,000 people vote that's 10% of the vote. If 15,000 people vote that's 7.5% of the vote.

The easier it is to vote the less power the cheaters have. Let's move voting into the 21st century. If I can safely bank electronically I sure as hell can safely electronically.

Unfortunately, not all of those ballots are legitimate. But when has that ever mattered in Hudson Co?

Of course it's corruption that's the problem and as some have noted, the final disproportionate paper ballots put in for BoE will tell the tale just as the hundreds submitted on behalf of Tim Occhipinti did in 2010.

People should relax because based on the nature of a presidential election, Hoboken is good for 1,000 requests. The rest of course which will be heavily traced to the fourth ward (4-3, 4-4) and certain specific areas of the third ward, (Church Towers) and other Old Guard pockets will be large but not likely to overturn the entire election.

More likely there is a battle for the third seat. Anthony Oland who finished fifth has already conceded on Facebook he lost.

He most definitely knows the math.

There's also hundreds of email and fax voters (if they can get them in to Hudson County) to be counted. Those will not be among the hundreds of paid votes.

There are surely paid-for mail in ballots like every other Hoboken election, but I'd agree with what Steve S said, in a Presidential election there are probably more than the usual number of really valid non-paid for mail ins by people who were going to be out of town, too busy on a Tuesday, etc the type of Hoboken voters who (notoriously) just skip voting in a local-only election if they can't make it in person, or just skip it period. But I guess we'll see. My wife and I VBM'd, out of town, and nobody paid us!

Anyone still denying that November elections yield a more democratic result through broader participation? I’m asking because I still see people trying to deny vote-buying in the HHA. For 2011 a grand total of 10,523 BOE votes were cast.

So far, 18,745 votes have been counted for this inaugural November BOE election. Granted, it was a presidential election year, but a very soggy one at that. GOTV was not a priority during the last week.

The arguments against November elections centered on the influence of external and/or statewide machine forces.

We did in fact see a quite a display of criminal (1000s of midnight fliers) or simply deplorable (repeated visits by a Nazi truck) attempts to influence the outcome. And of course rented support via Craigs List.

Ironically, those most loudly opposed to November elections also support the Move Forward ticket, the beneficiary of *all* of the pre-election dirty tricks and scams.

MF denials of responsibility for trucks and fliers are the functional equivalent of denials of vote-buying on the local level. Or denial of evolution on the national level. Sad, silly and a clear indicator that intelligent, adult conversation is off the table. For now.

As others have said, a presidential election turns out a far higher total via this voting method but after the elections in the vast majority of NJ moved to November including Hoboken, the Old Guard embittered by what they knew would be greater turnout, amped up their illicit paper ballot machine operation.

MSV can say it will exceed the hundreds generated for the Tim Occhipinti campaign in 2010 but we're not willing to say it will overturn the results on the machines for the BoE race.

Inflationary pressures have seen the paid 'campaign workers' get $50 reportedly for their vote, up from $40 in the Hoboken Housing Authority. Other areas may be included as well. They typically get more in the range of $75.
