The Hoboken City Council approved roughly $2 million in line items during Wednesday night's meeting after weeks of debate and threats of state intervention.
In an 8-1 vote—Councilwoman Beth Mason was the only council member voting "no"—the council decided to approve the measure, after voting on it for the third time.
Before the measure passed, Mayor Dawn Zimmer said that if not passed, the city would run out of funds in particular line items to pay salary and wages.
The point of highest contention was an almost $20,000 raise for the mayor's chief of staff, who also received an $11,000 raise a little more than a year ago. The debate on this issue heated up with Council President Ravi Bhalla quoting the former chiefs of staff's salaries and Councilman Michael Russo calling the council majority "clowns."
In the end, it was Councilman Tim Occhipinti who ended the suspension when he announced he'd be the sixth vote on the crucial line item transfer.
And although he said he'd approve the transfers in the best interest of the city, its residents and the tax payers, Occhipinti added, "I don't agree with everything that has to be transfered."

You have to give Beth Mason credit. When it comes to sabotaging Hoboken, no one will beat her, no one. She's number one.
She seems kinda sad the attempt to kill the hospital failed. There's not a no vote available to make up for that.
You would think pulling four molars out would be easier than seeing the self-proclaimed council minority whining like a bunch of sissies.
Oh we don't want to see a raise on the mayor's staff; that's horrible.
They would so love to destroy everyone in their way to drive Hoboken into the ground while making money off it. Doing the opposite is just so upsetting to them.

ccj, Just curious, is this the same Ravi Bhalla from Hoboken? The one who is on the city council? I'm not sure--can anyone verify?
HOBOKEN -- Councilman-at-Large Ravi Bhalla was under fire again last week after the Newark Star-Ledger reported that Bhalla gave $2,500 in political contributions to a political action committee (PAC) linked with Newark Mayor Cory Booker. Bhalla along with nine other vendors in the city of Newark contributed to the PAC “Empower Newark” before accepting millions of dollars in city contracts.
http://www.hudsonreporter.com/view/full_story/7260518/article--Councilman-Bhalla’s-ethics-again-under-question-
“A councilman (Ravi Bhalla) representing a city at the forefront of pay-to-play reform has apparently flouted the state pay-to-play law.” – Ron Zeitlinger, Deputy Managing Editor, The Jersey Journal
Just curious, do you think that because Councilman Bhalla has violated pay to play rules before he will do it again? I mean, it might not necessarily go to prison, but I'm sure there's probably some investigations still going on over his activities. Does he always donate money to political campaigns that can help his firm get contracts? Is that ok to do?

Not bad, not bad. You characterize contradictons in fact as personal attacks while claiming that our personal attacks are simply recitations of facts. Use part of any discredited newspaper article you can for these forays. The sheep won't bother to look into it themselves.
But as I have told you before, always state as fact that your critics are being paid. I always liked the term "hirelings" but I see that "minion" is the vogue now. Whichever you choose, just remember to repeat, repeat, repeat until it becomes a fact to the sheep. Always remember that lying is less work than clarifying and responding to a lie. Thus the sheep automatically see the response as less trustworthy than the effortlessly presented lie.
As for yourself, ALWAYS state that you are NEVER being paid. The sheep will come to believe it. They are amazing that way. Although they know you to have no employment other than to spread...information...yet they will convince themselves that you are what you say you are. There once was a public ba-job seeking weasel named Lame,
Who backed Beth Mason and his job went up in flames,
He wanted to be Chief of Staff,
but got caught up in Mason's Russo Graft,
And now blogs under multiple ids and has no shame.
Historical Fact: Lame had no problem when his prison boy candidate of second choice Peter Cammarano paid his Chief of Staff $125K. Mayor Anthony Russo paid his Chief of Staff $70K almost 20 years ago. I know Mikey Baby Doc hates when we invoke the sins of the father but whoomp there it is.
Enough of the armchair quarterbacking from fall on my sword prosbus and OutofControl. I don't have to enamored of all of Zimmer's hiring and salary choices to support her. Dan Bryan is a hard working and honest person. Zimmer got elected and has the right to pick people she trusts. Note to Mason Minions: These arguments are weak. Beth Mason better hire better consultants. Off to listen to that buttery voice on 1010 Wins. Some observations:
-Dan Bryan seems to satisfy Zimmer's main criteria for a $30,000 raise--- he's not from Hoboken.
-I didn't know these violations by Ravi Bhalla- and, I'm sorry, but as they were reported in newspapers, I believe them. Why do the bloggers on here try to discredit the source of EVERY critique of the Zimmer administration?
-You people remind me of watching a discussion on FoxNews.
-I do not think it is dignified at all that a former candidate for County Freeholder- Kurt Gardiner makes reference to a sitting councilman as "Mikey Baby Doc." Or that a person holding an appointed board position (N. Pincus) make such personal attacks.
- why does every post that is critical about Zimmer need to be answered with references to other people? Very defensive.
My sense is that prosbus and outofcontrol and others must be hitting on something you don't want people to know about or realize. That can be the only reason I see for the "Fox attacks" --

I guess if they repeat the lies and false allegations e enough times some will think it is true. .At one time none of the attacks from Mason were answered because the uber Mason bias H411 banned anyone who dared critize the extremely nasty political spin of Mason,Russo.& Co.
Now that H411 has been marginalized by Hoboken Patch and other sites the political spin from Mason Russo is answered and refuted at every turn.

The latest attack tactic from the Mason consultants is to fein a lack of civility by her critics since she reallly can't refute the facts behind her political actions.
As far as Mason's own civility one only has to think back to the insane, nasty rants and attacks by public and internet Lane Bajardi, Hoboken 411 and others.

Looks like Ms. Pincus does a fine job of her own for "rediculous allegations to try to silence or discredit her." Ms. Pincus was also visited by authorities after death threats by elected officials:
"HOBOKEN AND BEYOND -- Two detectives from the Hoboken Police Department questioned Hoboken-based blogger Nancy Pincus on Aug. 22 about one of a series of satirical entries she posted on her website, Grafix Avenger. The site frequently takes aim at Mayor Dawn Zimmer's political enemies." -Hoboken Reporter 9/5/11
Just another typical Zimmer appointee. Pincus is an appointed member of the Housing Zoning Board.
The article continues..."This letter differed from others in that it talked about wanting to join the FBI, saying "I've always wanted to shoot someone. I'd get a gun, right? Well, I'd definitely use it. Alot. Maybe every day ... Only do I ask questions first THEN shoot?" It then mentions that she has a list of people to arrest in town, and that she could shoot their door knob if they didn't answer, or "apply a Vulcan death grip." As indicated in the police report, Bajardi asked Brice if he "wanted to play games," during the alleged altercation. Brice replied, "Sure I want to play chess,” the report said.
Competello said the department conducted no investigation pertaining to the incident. Although it was not a typical prototype robbery, the facts sustain the charge initially.
“The decision to upgrade or downgrade a criminal charge rests with the Hudson County Prosecutor, not with law enforcement,” Competello said, “and I presume the charge will ultimately be downgraded to a Disorderly Person offense and be adjudicated in municipal court.”
Brice filed the complaint the day following the forum. Bajardi could file a criminal counter-complaint against Brice if he so chooses, police said.

You can visit prosbus in the slammer, if so. OOC is probably safe, but I wouldn't count on her very special friend. Although, who really knows until it all comes down.
Which those on the side of the law hope will be soon.

Another example of people who make "rediculous allegations" against this appointed public official:
"When I ran for School Board with Real Results, Nancy Pincus (a.k.a. Grafix Avenger) publicly disseminated a photo of our heads in a bowl of fluid containing excrement. When the Kids First team was asked for an apology – none was given. Putting pictures of candidates in excrement and stating you want to shoot someone is Harassment and Bullying as defined by the State of NJ and the School. The Kids First team must follow rules and dismiss Nancy Pincus or The Kids First members should be reported to the State and graded an “F” for leading and aiding in the bullying." - Elizabeth Markevitch

i remember Beth Mason's uber "friend" Lane Bajardi was really ticked about that bit of political satire. So much so he made copies of the offending graphic and passed them out to everyone.
But perhaps it was just part of the plan to put a Mason/ Russo body on the Zoning Board when they were in the majority on the City Council ?

I guess its unthinkable to imagine being offended by publicly reported death threats, use of old nazi-propagander, and images of public figures in a bowl of turds? To say nothing of Mayor Zimmer's judgement in affirming Nancy Pincus. But-- its Mason and Russo's fault? Ridiculous.

ARREST MADE!
http://www.nj.com/hobokennow/index.ssf/2010/04/hoboken_police_blotter_hoboken_3.html
Hoboken police have arrested a 39-year-old Hoboken resident on allegations from a Hoboken blogger that the man, Lane Bajardi, assaulted him and took his digital camera at the April12 school board candidates’ forum held at Stevens Institute of Technology, according to Lt. Mark Competello.
Ooops, sorry. Old news!

Part 1:
The political discourse in Hoboken just gets more & more ridiculous. Clearly the council minority is acting like obstructionists and, therefore, any legitimate criticism of the Zimmer administration (and there are legitimate criticisms) never get a full vetting in the public, on blogs, at council meetings, etc. Instead we end up rehashing nonsense like the baseless attack on Pincus being some sort of anti-Semite. (by the way, Zimmer allies deserve criticism for not defending Pincus.) In the aftermath Pincus makes it her mission in life to destroy Mason & these days comes off as an obsessive quack (IMO only.) Opinions on the now, thankfully completed, hospital transaction soar to comic book levels: Mason tried to KILL the hospital; Zimmer SAVED the hospital. Gimme a break – what happened was:some hardworking citizens selected a buyer & after many minority antics, the transaction went through. Mason attempts to obstruct were political theater designed to harm Zimmer. Without those antics, there could have been legitimate debate that might have led to the accepted view of: no great outcome was possible and, therefore, Zimmer sheparded the best outcome to a bad situation. She didn’t SAVE the hospital; that claim is for legacy; right now she might merely have postponed the inevitable. Still an accomplishment, "Zimmer SAVED saved the hospital” the Zimmer side is participating in the political theater too (albeit to a lesser extent.)

You clearly haven't been paying attention. The mayor busted it to save the hospital and Beth Mason did every underhanded thing she could to see the hospital sale fail.
No one can match political theater with Michael "make out the check to Russo for Hoboken" and Beth "the counte$$ buys everything" Mason.
The mayor is busy doing the people's business and putting into place real policy and that included saving the hospital and yes it's a save, not a day to day temporary situation.
The people on the hospital board who saved the institution were selected by the mayor. Obviously you didn't know that or you wouldn't have made that error.
You got part of it right but get the rest of the details correct too. "Almost there."

Part 2
As to Ravi & his $2500 political contribution, it’s possible he had his eye on the contract he got immediately after he made it, but, I’m more concerned with his votes on the council. What should be a minor issue of little concern to Hoboken citizens gets magnified by the constant voter fraud issues in this town. If only the focus could be on how he governs/votes. Aside from a major double-cross of the tenants in he rent control debate (which will lose Bhalla some votes in the next election) his votes have been pretty reasoned. As to the confidential aide: I wish we didn’t have to spend any time discussing salaries. Yes, he’s overpaid; it doesn’t matter if Cammy paid he’s ‘guy’ more. The Zimmer tribe batted back this claim in connection with the new new public safety director by comparing credentials. This also applies here. Cammy’s guy had a law degree. Does Byron? No. And, quite frankly, the exorbitant raises in so short of a time span do come off as Zimmer pulling a “fast one” on the public. Ultimately, so what? Why do we waste me on this stuff? If more attention were paid to the issues being resolved or not resolved: (Are all citizens being represented equally & are we putting their well-being first & foremost? Are we slowing overdevelopment? Are we protecting our quality of life & infrastructure? Has corruption been curtailed?) we’d really be moving the city in the right direction. We’re not; we’re at a standstill.

Here we go again the fall back spin from Mason,Russo & Co.
The crooked Peter Cammerano and his campaign was the first to use the "bring old an new Hoboken together" disinegous politcal rehetoric to new Hoboken while continuing the same hate rumours and lies to their old base. Now Mason, Russo & Co are using the same disingenous political tactics. Which could be a result of Mrs. Mason hiring the same political consulting firm as Peter Cammerano used (and stiffed).
Understanding that the old machine vote is shrinking they must reach out beyond that locked in vote/payed for the day that Cammerano bragged about on the FBI tapes that would vote for him "even if he was indicted."
As Hoboken has grown and the old machine vote continues to shrink the political ops understand that they need to reach beyond the four Wards they still control or can buy to win any City wide election. The lie of unity has to be spread to new Hoboken to to that end and the same divisve us against them is still in play in old Hoboken.
Anyone who understands that a small minority of old Hoboken exists and profits because of the hate and divsiveness they have been spewing for decades that has never stopped despite the rehetoric by the political ops spin on the blogs and press.
The old saying goes fool me once shame on you, Fool me twice shame on you.

Sorry a law degree doesn't make you more qualified or justify getting double the salary of the existing Chief of Staff who worked his way to earning his current salary that is still less than what Mayor Anthony Russo paid his guy almost 20 years ago.
The raises came after a huge savings to Hoboken at a pittance of a salary in the 35K range. Cammrano's guy started at 125K. Big difference and it's still a big difference.
The mayor's office actually cut about 200K from earlier. So all that low pay really added up right out of the gate.
We're not at a standstill. Progress is being made but is being obstructed at every turn. Watch the meetings and you can see it in the short space of 10 minutes at most any meeting.

Hobbs- the anti Zimmer vote (aka "old vote") is not shrinking-- recall how the council majority cowered and rolled over when the old guard threatened to bring the changing of the voting for the council from May to November. There was a signature campaign and the Zimmer camp did not want to have another city wide election loss. Also explains her decision to leave Kurt waiving in the wind as a Freeholder candidate. The political calculus is: 1st, 3rd and 4th wards are old guard 70%-30%. 2nd, 5th, and 6th go new guard roughly 52%-48%. Plus, the vile and character attacks people like you and yours do online contribute to voter apathy.

Whether or not the "even if I'm indicted" voting bloc is shrinking is hardly the point. The number of independent voters is growing. And the loose coalition of anti-reform candidates has done nothing but turn them off.
Beth's fliers, push polls, and attempts to burn down the hospital have pretty much finished her politically. Even before the FBI has their say. Russo and Ramos simply aren't viable city-wide. Glatt is lazy, Novak is toast. What else you got? Please say Occhipinti.
The bottom line - the old guard is mortified by November elections precisely because they are stranded at a level of "even if I'm indicted" votes that could not survive larger turn-out. They reached back into the "even if I'm indicted" bloc to get their petition signed. That's the only game they know. It's your pathetic duty to try to make it sound like something noble.
Some legacy you'll leave behind.

no, GA - I'm not worried if prosbus agrees with my post and yes, I agree w/you that the city does not belong in the Cammy lawsuit (although the upcoming food truck legislation matters more to me than that silly lawsuit and will have more impact on the town) and yes, GA I agree that mason is a loon. I love the threads by the commenter that does the long psychological pieces on Mason et al on your blog. They're funny and very on point. Apologies if all the "crazy mason, evil mason and criminal mason all the time and anyone that ever said so much as a 'hello' to mason is also crazy, evil and criminal too kind of bores me. There certainly is an audience for it and it's your blog. But I was just wondering, did you have any thoughts/comments on anything else on my post(s) beyond my, possibly, insensitive comment? (I say possibly insensitive because this, after all, this is a comment thread and any minute now there w/b comments from others about how I'm a mason punk or how Lane is having another conversation with himself here.) Neither being true, but hey, it's easier to veer away from actual discussion when we reduce every discussion to: Mason=Satan; Zimmer=Angel.

But, briefly will hit a few points, since you've asked.
1- agree that it's most important how Bhalla votes, and I've agreed with him most of the time. Love his performance as CC prez, knows how to handle the kiddies at the grown-ups table.
2-agree that reform fell down during the antisemitism smear hoax. but not all did.
3-Bryan is not overpaid- he works long hours and is always 'on call'. He's been mauled by partisans and has garbage sprayed all over the internet which will haunt him for the rest of his career. 65K is a living wage.
4- I would like to see food trucks in a central and convenient location away that is agreeable to surrounding restaurants. I think proposed fees are too high.
5- you're framing your perspective in a stark black-white manner. No, don't think Zimmer is an angel. Yes, think Mason may be Satan- check for horns.
