Fountains of Wayne Give Hobokenites Taste of New Album

The power-pop rockers bring their summer rock and roll record, "The Sky Full of Holes" to Maxwell's on Thursday night.

It's always a great time when Fountains of Wayne come to Hoboken And it was no different when they played the first of the band's two sold out shows at Maxwell's on Thursday night.

Hobokenites and loyal fans gave the power pop-rockers a hero's welcome as they got onstage. They kicked the set off with "Little Red Light" from 2003's "Welcome Interstate Managers."

And even though everyone was more than happy with a trip through Fountains of Wayne's song catalog, the room erupted when the band announced the release date of their new record, "The Sky Full of Holes," which lead singer Chris Collingwood dubbed "Abominog." "Yeah, it's about a mystical creature that eats people," Collingwood said before playing "Dip in the Ocean."

The new track seemed perfect for the season with its summery and beach vibe mixed with the Fountains of Wayne touch. As pleased as they were with the positive reception toward the new song, bassist Adam Schlesinger was surprised people knew the lyrics since "The Sky Full of Holes" doesn't release till Aug. 2. "I think our record may have leaked because those people know all the words to that song," Schlesinger announced. "Damn the internet!"

Aside from the new material, Collingwood's pedals seemed like they were possessed when a tax assistance commercial filtered through the sound system. "This is the weirdest thing that happened at one of our shows," Schlesinger admitted.

Despite the surprise sound effects, Collingwood brushed it off saying "F--- it, let's play!"

They treated fans to a few other new songs including "The Summer Place," which was so fitting for the night as well as "Richie and Ruben," a song Schlesinger said was about "two dopes."

But even though the new songs were great, no one could deny loving their older stuff. Like they have done in , Fountains of Wayne made sure to get crowd participation on "Hey Julie." And they brought everyone way back to their sophomore record, 1999's "Utopia Parkway," with "The Valley of Malls."

"We're going to play a song that we haven't played in a really long time," Collingwood said. "So if we f--- it up, go get your money back."

Luckily for them, they not only remembered the words but also made everyone remember that they were great even before "Stacy's Mom" released. And although it seemed that they through the entire show without playing that song, the band slyly slipped it into the end of their encore. However it didn't seem to get as much enthusiastic cheers as "No Better Place" or "Mexican Wine."

And the band's onstage collaboration on singer-songwriter and the show's opener, Mike Viola, got everyone excited. "Mike and I used to sing this song in 1992 together," Collingwood said before playing "Fire in the Canyon."

After watching Thursday's gig, it makes one wonder what Fountains of Wayne have up their sleeves tonight. Will they change up the set list? Will "Stacy's Mom" be part of it? If you have a ticket to tonight's sold out show, consider yourself lucky because it'll be one that you're glad you didn't miss this summer.
