Go Rowing at New Cardio Fitness Studio

Go Row, a new fitness studio uptown, opens on Saturday.

Hobokenites looking to get a rush from rowing no longer need to jump into the Hudson River. They can now take classes at Go Row Studios, a new fitness center at 1422 Grand Street that gives clients a full-body workout by simulating the motion of rowing a boat on open water.

Owner Garrett Roberts has worked as a personal trainer and nutritionist for over 15 years. He has lived in Hoboken for nine years and decided to open his first ever rowing studio in the Mile Square. Go Row is located on the fourth floor of the uptown building that also houses the Pilsener Haus beer garden.

The Go Row concept involves alternating rowing sessions, simulated on a special machine, with lifting free weights. Each rower will also use a pair of weights ranging from 5 to 35 pounds, according to ability.

Roberts said the rowing motion provides a full-body workout. He estimated each class could burn between 600-800 calories.

“You use muscles you don't use on any other type of cardio equipment,” Roberts said. “You can get your heart rate higher, and burn twice the amount of calories than you would normally burn.”

While clients row, a fan built into each wooden machine will circulate water, creating the impression of a rushing river.

Go Row will offer 50 minute group classes consisting of 10 participants between 6am and 10am, and again from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. Roberts will serve as an instructor. In between the group class hours he will be available to teach individualized classes.

Clients can register for classes online, though they have the option of paying in person. Each class costs $29, with discounted rates for packages of 6, 12, 24 and 48 classes.

Roberts said a client he had been training helped him find the name Go Row, which he said describes the concept and also refers to his initials.

“It's simple and to the point,” he said. “It's motivating. You can say, 'hey, go row'.”

Go Row will begin classes during its grand opening on Saturday, December 03. Roberts will offer clients a free 20 minute session during the weekend from 10-2pm. For more information, visit the Go Row Studios website.
