Happy Ten Years: Buddy and Lisa Renew Their Vows
Here's what you missed on Monday night's new episode of Cake Boss.
Buddy sure was busy Monday night, with both the penultimate episode of his contest show Next Great Baker, and the season five premiere of Cake Boss.
Not only is Buddy busy at the bakery, but this is the week he's renewing his marriage vows with Lisa for their tenth anniversary. They're going to do it on a cruise to the Bahamas, and the whole family is coming. Of course Buddy's going to bake for the wedding.
“This week I bake the best cake of my life,” he says.
But he's having a tough time coming up with a design, which he compares to writer's block. “I got cake block,” he says. Flaubert had that too.
Buddy and two of his employees try designs using Styrofoam cake forms. They're the nude mannequins of the baking world.
He's thinking about recreating, with new flourishes, the cake from his first wedding, which had so many sugar flowers that they took three weeks to make.
Buddy is also going to make a cake of the cruise ship itself as a gift to its crew for their first year in service. It's a Disney ship. The cake's got to be big but to scale with lots of little effects like cabin windows. Buddy is explaining to Ralph how the ship has an aqueduct flowing into its pool, and he utilizes the word “supposeably”.
Buddy's got a new machine that enables him to make edible lace, which he'll use to match Lisa's dress, and he's going to do lots of flowers, this time tropical ones for the Bahamian setting.
Meanwhile, on the cruise cake Mauro says he hasn't been on a ship since he came to America from Italy in 1968. Buddy's sisters, come to see the cake, talk about how all their cabins will be next to Buddy's. “Whoever bothers me is going overboard,” he says.
Buddy and Lisa reminisce about their first wedding. Lisa had 18 bridesmaids, because Buddy wanted 18 groomsmen! After the best man with the ring what does everyone else do? That's like those big time college football teams with 100 players and the eighth string quarterback's job is just to do the homework for the starter, not that that ever happens in pure angelic college athletics.
The cruise cake is done, and Buddy starts figuring where to put the lace on the wedding cake. He's still having trouble with the final design. He just starts piping to get into the zone. Lisa praises his piping skills. “Nobody pipes like your man,” Buddy says.
He gets a nice design going and then starts adding the flowers. In the end the cake looks lovely and Buddy is pleased.
The bakers deliver both cakes to the cruise ship docked in Florida. Unfortunately the flowers are falling off from the humidity. But Buddy says he's going to figure out a fix, and in the meantime the whole family gets on the boat.
The first thing they all do is get in the pool. Everyone goes tubing through the aqueduct. In case you were wondering, Buddy, shirtless, has a lot of chest hair.
Everyone pressures Mauro to go on the slide. He relents and takes off his tee-shirt. He's got the belly of a man who's been around food all his life. He doesn't want to go on the slide. After all, this is exactly how the Poseidon Adventure tipped over. He gets in the tube, and with a camera strapped to it we just see his frightened face and hear him scream oh my God 300 times. But he gets to the end and lives.
While the ship is docked and everyone is shopping Buddy delivers the cruise cake to the crew. It's too big for the elevator so they have to carry it up six decks. The crew is very happy to see it. Buddy meets the captain, who's got the villain Goldmember's accent from Austin Powers.
That job done, Buddy treats the family, just the adults, to a rehearsal dinner. Lisa's father reminisces about when Buddy asked for his daughter. Buddy's sister Grace jokes about how big Buddy and Lisa's family got in ten years, with four kids. “Youse didn't play around,” she says. Actually Grace, that seems to be all they were doing.
The only hitch to them getting hitched is that it's raining really hard so they have to nix the beach and do it inside. Buddy says it rained at their first wedding too. He's gracious that the ship's crew prepared a special room as a backup.
The loving couple renew their vows. It was a beautiful ceremony. Everyone had a great time at the party and enjoyed the cake, Lisa especially. Buddy replaced the flowers with real ones that look almost as good as the ones he makes. Though it didn't have any pyrotechnics or special effects or any of the other crazy things Buddy does, maybe it is the best cake he's ever done – at least supposeably.

Happy Anniversary Buddy! Looks like he can have his cake and eat it too. After 10 years of marriage it looks like things are quite ship-shape. Renewing his wedding vows is simply icing on the cake. And his marriage is flowering; even his wife thinks he is piping hot! p1ywood- your volley?
