A city with as much character as Hoboken has is now home to a store that sells items of an even quirkier nature. The Haha Haven: Smoke Shop & Accessories opened just before the Christmas holiday.
The store, located at 303 First St., sells a variety of water based smoking pipes, ashtrays, tee shirts, patches, stickers and other novelty items.
Owner Andrew Godsil said he had the idea to open the Haha Haven, known colloquially as a head shop, for many years. A Hoboken resident, he thought the store could appeal to a young demographic, especially given that few other local stores might sell similar items.
“With the age group here it just made sense,” he said.
Though the Haha Haven does sell water pipes which conceivably could be used to smoke illegal substances (in addition to legal tobacco products), a store sign explicitly instructs customers not to refer to such activity. All customers must also be able to show identification proving they are over the age of 18.
“Everything here is for legal use only,” Godsil said.
In addition to featuring sales racks, Godsil said that he plans to devote the rear section of the space to showcase the work of local artists.
Godsil said his girlfriend, who helps him run the store, came up with the name for the Haha Haven.
“We figured some things in here would give people a chuckle, so why not go with it,” he said.

I hope that 'everything in Hoboken is about the children, the children mom brigade' doesn't complain to the Mayor about having a head shop in town. HaHa will end up with so many restrictions (for the sake of children that might wonder in) that they'll end up with so many banned items they'll only be able to sell tee shirts before it's all over.

Well Jabberwock, if I can remember the ancient times of my youth, head shops sold certain items (let's call a bong a bong) with an 18 and over restriction. In fact, there was a lovely head shop near my home called 'The Groove Tube'- they sold t-shirts, dashikis, jewelry, candles, incense, rolling paper, bongs, pipes, black light posters, the whole works. Great place.
As a rep of the 'mommy brigade' I don't see a problem unless they're selling bongs and rolling papers to kiddies. I don't see the 'mommy brigade' marching on bars and liquor stores.
Good luck to the head shop. I hope they play some music from that era...

I'm a mom. And by the time my kid is old enough to wander into this store unsupervised, she could just as easily take the PATH to the city and explore the village. It is my job to raise her to be confident, self-reliant, responsible person.
I'm sure that all the restriction that already exist about selling tobacco will be enough for any rational person.

Thanks GA and Journey - I'm familiar with both of your 'take' on things in town. And, while both of you are proud moms; I hate to break it to you, but neither of you have the kind of chutzpah that would land you in Hoboken's very own mommy brigade.

Jabberwock,
I understand your concern, however you needn't worry about me selling to minors in town. I do not promote anything illegal and that includes sale of tobacco product to minor people. I will not be banned from selling anything as I am following all the rules and legal restrictions. Have a lovely day.
