Hoboken Charter School Holds Annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration

The March on Washington will be held on Jan. 14.

 

It's time for the annual Martin Luther King celebration on Friday, when Hoboken's charter school students will march on Washington Street for the thirteenth time.

The march starts at 10:15 a.m. and will end in front of City Hall, where the mayor will issue a proclamation, according to the Hoboken Charter School. 

This year's theme is "putting the move back into the civil rights movement."

Classes at the Hoboken Charter School will evolve around civil rights issues Jim Crow laws, as well as a focus on women's rights. 

On Martin Luther King Day itself—Monday, Jan. 17—the school will host its annual "sing out for justice" charity concert. Last year, the proceeds went to help hurricane victims in Haiti.

This year, the event will also have a coat drive to help Hoboken residents in need, refreshments will be sold to raise a funds for a feminism class. Money will also go toward the ASPCA and PETA.

All members of the Hoboken community are invited to attend the concert at the All Saints Episcopal Church on Monday.
