Kids First Win Machine Vote in Hoboken

Hoboken voted to move the municipal elections to November and to eliminate run-off elections. Rent control remains in tact in Hoboken, after Public Question 2 failed.

Kids First won Hoboken's Board of Education race in Tuesday night's elections, according to preliminary results from the city clerk's office. Absentee ballots and provisional votes were not yet included in the count as of Tuesday night.

While Tom Kluepfel, Jean Marie Mitchell and Ruthy McAllister won the machine votes, it's unclear if absentee ballots and provisional votes are going to make a difference.

It will take until Friday for the absentee ballots to be counted.

Kluepfel earned a total of 3426 votes, Mitchell received 3223 votes and McAllister took 3498 votes.

In the race for the three open school board seats in Hoboken, the Kids First ticket —  Kluepfel, Mitchell and incumbent McAllister all three backed by Mayor Dawn Zimmer — fought to hang on to their board majority.

The other slate in Tuesday's elections was Move Forward, made up of candidates Anthony Oland, Felice Vasquez and Liz Markevitch.

Oland received a total of 2512 votes, Markevitch got 2844 votes and Vazquez got 2488 votes. Independent Patricia Waiters got a total of 987 votes.

"The vote by mails are scary," McAllister said at the Kids First victory party at Court Street. "We won the honest vote, the most important vote to me."

McAllister, the only incumbent running in this election, said she was "proud and happy" to be elected back to the school board.

While happy to win on the machines after being off the board for a year, Mitchell said she is still nervous about the absentee ballots that will still have to be counted.

"I'm worried about the absentee ballots," she said. "That's always on issue."

It wasn't clear as of Tuesday night how many vote by mail ballots were sent into the Hudson County Clerk's office.

Two weeks ago, all seven candidates debated the issues in a public forum.

The school board race was particularly contentious, even for Hoboken standards, complete with a roving political attack ad depicting a Nazi flag in a urinal last month.

In the senatorial race, Hudson County native U.S. Senator Bob Menendez beat Joe Kyrillos. Hoboken's Congressman Albio Sires easily won re-election on Tuesday.

Hobokenites also decided three public questions in Hoboken. As a result of Tuesday's elections, municipal elections will be moved to November. Run-off elections were eliminated and rent control was upheld in the city of Hoboken.

On the first question 7,621 voted to eliminate run-off elections, while 5,295 voted to keep them. Hoboken also chose to move the municipal elections to November by a large margin with 8,475 voting "yes" and 2,485 voting "no."

This means that the 2013 mayoral election will take place in November 2013, rather than May.

Hobokenites also overwhelmingly came out for President Barack Obama. On Tuesday, 11,611 Hobokenites voted for Obama, while 5,843 voted for Republican candidate Mitt Romney.

What a knee-jerk moron you are.

Who had the Nazi truck?
Who had the midnight fliers?
Who had the illegal 5013c campaign head-quarters?
Who hired the out of town craigs list goon squad?
Who may yet steal this election with a stack of VBMs from "campaign workers" you never saw?

But because KF won fair and square you call it a machine. Idiot.

The "machine" you are referring to amounts to the will of the people voting in November instead of April. Gotta problem with that? What a surprise.

about the rent control question by any informational seminars they might have been attended at their cmplexes.

Zimmer's opposition to the rent control question is a major strike against her in my book, especially as the question apparently lost by a narrow margin. Rent control is a negative for everyone in the long run. And while it probably can't just be abolished immediately, as a political reality, there's no reason Hoboken has to to have the most onerous rent control statute in the state. And this ballot question just backed it off *slightly*.

No, I'm not a landlord. I'm a real Zimmer supporter who is less and less enthralled with her. I know lots of Mason/Old Crook (more accurate term than 'Old Guard' IMO) bloggers pretend to be disaffected Zimmer supporters, but I'm really becoming one. I will probably be forced to vote for her again if as I expect, it's between her and a Mason/Old Crook candidate or 'young fresh faced' stooge (Cammarano/Occippinti type) fronting for them. But I wonder if she's weakening herself more than she realizes trying to please everybody. I was interested to overhear a council ally of hers at a social event who seemed to have a similar opinion to mine.

I think city hall should have steered clear of rent control entirely, instead of buying into the us vs. them mentality. If the landscape in this town continues to be reform vs. crook, I'll vote for reform just because they aren't stealing my money. If we could get enough traction to get the Cammaranos, Occhipintis, Masons and Russo family legitimately out of politics, we could benefit by having elections where performance and ideas really would rule the day, but as long as there is a group actively trying to sink this town for their own political benefit, that's not in play.

With all due respect you have misinterpeted Mayor Zimmer's stand on this issue.
If after all the votes are in the ballot question still fails, I would expect to see a revised rent control plan proposed that would have greater penalties when abuse occurs and be a fair compromise to both sides. While that still may not make those with the polar opposits opinions on rent control happy, it will be fair.

Mayor Zimmer or any politician who is willing to take the heat generated by hot button issues such as rent control to find a fair solution is a very good thing. :-)

I'm actually disgusted by the councilmembers & mayor getting involved on the rent control issue. Back off. That's it. It's one thing to endorse a slate at the school because that directly impacts City Hall's budget (vis-a-vis: How much of our tax dollars are getting passed from City Hall to the schools). But ballot questions that don't pertain to City Hall such as rent control are ridiculous and pandering.

As long as Zimmer is the only honest game in town, she'll continue to get my vote. But the second we have two honest people running for office I'm picking the one who actually isn't pandering to the biggest whiners.

I'm not sure how taking a stand on a contentious issue that divides her supporters reflects an attempt to "please everyone." Seems to me to be exactly the opposite. She waded into a hot button issue knowing full well her position would displease many who voted for her. And if the proposal fails it will be because it was rejected by the voters not because Zimmer took a position. Reform voters are generally intelligent thinking people who make up their own minds, not sheep who just vote the way they're told. If the thing ultimately passes it will be the will of the people and if it fails the same will be true.

As for those who think she should have stayed out of the fray, that might have been politically wise but certainly not very courageous. Why does Zimmer have any less right to express her opinion on issues of concern to the public than anyone else?

Rent control absolutely applies to City Hall - It's part of our municipal code. The Mayor and 4 council people were absolutely correct to be vocal in their position on the rent control question. They represent tenants, owners and landlords. All of those constituents have a right to know where their elected officials stand on this part of the municipal code. Several other council persons took a position on ballot questions #1 & #3 as well, which was also completely appropriate. Hobbs is also correct, Zimmer's position was in no way whatsoever reflective of an "us" vs. "them" mentality.

i will be voting for mayor zimmer next november but I did vote in favor of the rent control change in contradiction of the position she took. though I think she is doing a good job, i didn't completely agree with her position and therefore made my own decision. to call us zimmer zombies is plain foolish. we are educated individuals who make up our own minds. personally i would like to see rent control completely abolished but that is why I am not in politics because that would not go over so well with the voting public. i do believe she is very well aware of the problems we have in hoboken (abuse of affordable housing, rent control, etc.) and will deal with in an appropriate manner when the time is right and people are willing to compromise on the issues at hand.

I'd be interested voter participation in Hoboken. What # voted in Presidential, Senate, House races? Then the # for the questions, seems about 12-13,000. The fall-off to the BOE races seems to be significant, with the top vote getter at 3500. I say that the voter particpation that was the rallying cry for so many, did not materialize.

Well, let's have a look. Total votes cast (for three seats):
2008 - 11,215
2009 - 15,056
2010 - 9,941
2011 - 10,523
2012 - 18.995

Looks like increased voter participation to me, especially in light of neither campaign being able to communicate with voters in the week leading up to the election.

Though others have responded in various ways to my raising the rent control issue, I certainly didn't say Zimmer had no 'right' to express an opinion. That's always a straw man anyway, somebody's 'right' to have or express an opinion.

I simply disagree strongly with Zimmer, and while it's possible to construct a 'benefit of the doubt' argument that she took that position bravely, I tend to think she did it because she thinks she can always count on voters like me who intensely detest the Old Crooks, while pandering to an additional segment of subsidized tenants who don't give a flying f about reform. And if it really wouldn't affect one single vote for her to take up the cause... then why did she waste time doing so?

But I agree with Puzzle, until the Old Crook faction completely collapses, Zimmer is at least partly right in assuming she can get away with being a half ass reformer (which she is, at best, on many things, not just this) and I'll still be forced to vote for her. But I still wonder if such pandering affects her political position overall as positively as I believe she thinks it does.

HOBO87

I also think Zimmer is likeable, trustworthy (relative to the crooks who ruled the 20+ previous years I was here before she took office) and not the best leader.

There's certainly room for agreeable disagreement about the pace of change. But though no political insider by any means, I'd again mention my interest in a council ally's open statement, in a small group, of his frustration with Zimmer's tendency to try to placate Old Crook voters (not the OC's themselves) too much, and I noted that the same councilman made no mention of the rent control ordinance in his note to constituents before the election. So again Zimmer has the 'right' to express an opnion, and I have the 'right' to be displeased that she didn't stay silent if she couldn't summon the courage to actually support the measure (rent control is a basic component of the kind of electorate that elects corrupt politicians, so favoring rent control and speaking of 'long term reform' is a contradiction, just IMO). And supporters' intensity and monetary contributions to campaigns can also be affected, not just their votes. Just how I feel has no measurable impact, obviously, but I again wonder if Zimmer is weakening herself by trying to be a 'third way' herself it seems (I totally agree that self proclaimed 'third ways' against her have up to now uniformly been fronts for the Old Crooks).

I know that's always eventually the response, criticize the mayor, and you must be 'spinning' for somebody. Care to tell me for whom, rather than just making such a vague innuendo?

The 'A grade for the mayor' position reminds me a little of Steve Jobs' comment about President Obama (though AFAIK Jobs continued to basically favor Obama over the alternative), that Obama spent a lot of time explaining to Jobs why almost everything he agreed with Jobs was desirable to improve the business climate was impossible to do. Maybe it is impossible to really clean out the PD, FD, and City Hall employees in a serious way, make any progress toward ejecting the high income freeloaders from 'middle income' buildings which pay almost no taxes, and in general actually lower property tax rates meaningfully (the small cut I got by challenging my assessment dwarfed the effect of any rate cuts in last few years). Maybe nothing much can be done on those, and Zimmer has done nothing much on them. I do give her high marks for getting rid of the hospital albatross. I guess it just touches a nerve for her to actually come out in support of the blight of rent control, and I think it's for the usual reason politicians have supported this terrible policy where ever it's been implemented: more votes to be had from subsidized tenants than votes from landlords whose property rights are thrown under the bus.

If the above is 'spin', so be it.

I question the integrity of every campaign that employes hundreds of street workers and the honesty of every vote cast by those street workers. No CC or BOE race needs that many workers and it is really suspect when so many of them use a VBM ballot and only get paid when they turn their ballot in to the campaign that is giving them that $40 or $100 check.

ruth mcAllister is an idiot.

"The vote by mails are scary," McAllister said at the Kids First victory party at Court Street. "We won the honest vote, the most important vote to me."

Wonder why the schools are such a wreck? Morons like mcAllister run the board of ed?

If you voted by mail, McAllister thinks you are dishonest. That's the kind of nonsense they are teaching to the kids in our schools? If you were flooded, out of electricty or maybe living somewhere out of Hoboken and voted by mail, then kids first calls you a crook. if you're an old lady with an oxygen machine and you don't get out much anymore so you sent in an absentee ballot, then McAllister thinks you are a dishonest character.

Hope the thousands of people who voted for this idiot are happy. She used that same insane logic to fire two of the best teachers in hoboken.

FACT: Peter Cunningham is sending around a letter telling KF supporters they can still get in their email votes. Hey peter talk to mcAllister cause she doesn't want those votes cause they are not honest.
