Dog's Death by Poisoning Probed by Police

Hoboken police are investigating whether a 5-year-old cavachon dog was intentionally poisoned by a jilted ex-boyfriend. The dog—Bailey—belonged to a 41-year-old Hoboken woman. 

The woman left for work around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, leaving her ex-boyfriend and her dog at her Monroe Street apartment, according to police reports.

Three hours later, the woman received several phone calls asking her to report to the Animal Infirmary on Adams Street. When she arrived, she was told her dog was dead, and that he had been poisoned —likely with rat poisoning, police said. 

When the woman confronted her ex-boyfriend about the incident, he said he had taken Bailey out for a walk after his mouth started turning blue, police said. 

The woman told police that the couple had fought the night before, and she had told her boyfriend, a West New York resident, that she didn't want to see him again, police said.

The woman allegedly told him that she didn't like the way he treated her dog, according to police reports. The couple had been together for eight months, police said. 

The woman also told police that her ex-boyfriend would yell at the dog, slap the dog as well as tease the animal, according to reports. 

According to the police report, the West New York man had just started a new job at The Taco Truck in New York City. 

The woman also told police she found a bottle of Clorox bleach out of place, police said. When she confronted her ex-boyfriend and asked him if he had done anything to Bailey, he denied it, police said. There was no rat poison in the woman's apartment. 

The dog has since been cremated, according to the police reports, but the case remains under investigation.
