Hoboken Public Schools May Re-Open Thursday

Hoboken's public schools will "hopefully" open on Thursday, said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Toback.

Opening up the schools has been challenging because the lack of heat in some of the buildings, the damage in others and the fact that the High School and Wallace are currently in use respectively as the distribution center and a shelter.

Of all the public schools, the Connors School suffered the biggest damage, Toback said. Three classrooms were "destroyed," as well as hte cafeteria and offices on the first floor.

The Pre-K classes in Connors will be moved to the Brandt School until further notice.

Brandt, Demarest and Hoboken High weren't damaged by the storm and power there has been restored.

At the Wallace School, the basement was flooded badly, Toback said. The building's boilers were flooded as well.

Toback ensured that without heat, no schools would be re-opened. Breakfast and lunch will be served to the students once the schools open back up, Toback said.

There is currently no heat at the St. Francis facility that is being reneted by the district. The HOPES pre-school classes will also be moved to the Brandt School.

The opening of the schools isn't 100 percent certain yet, Toback said. On Wednesday afternoon, the district will make its final announcement.
