Hoboken's PATH Station Closed for Several More Weeks
A cheaper ferry fare of $5 will be instated this week, to ease the commute back and forth to Manhattan.

While parts of the PATH system are back up and running, Hoboken's station suffered so much damage during Sandy that it will remain for several more weeks, the city announced on Sunday.
A new ferry option will run from the Hoboken Terminal to 39th Street, for $5 a trip.
Trains run every day between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m.
The PATH is running from 33rd Street to Journal Square and to Newark. The World Trade Center station remains closed as well.
According to a release from the Governor's office: "NJ Transit customers will now be able to take a bus to the Hoboken Ferry Terminal and then transfer to a ferry that will take passengers to Pier 79 at 39th street in Manhattan. The fare is $5 and ferries will run back and forth between Hoboken and Manhattan from 6 a.m. – 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Free shuttle buses will be provided from Pier 79 to midtown Manhattan."
Hoboken commuters who travel by PATH can also choose to take the train from Newport — about a 15 minute walk from the Hoboken Terminal.

Eric, Christopher Street in Greenwich Village is still closed. So is 9th Street. The 14th Street (& 6th Ave) station is open. I took the Path from Newport to 14th last night.

9th Street just opened on PATH.

The walk to Newport is 15 minutes FROM Hoboken Terminal. ADD the time it takes you to walk there. I'm downtown, takes me 20 minutes and I'm a long legged fast walker.

I agree. Last night I took a cab from Hoboken Terminal to the Newport Station. Five minutes, $10 + tip. The driver assured me that it would be easy to find cabs outside the Newport Station when I made my return trip.

NJT just needs to run more buses at all hours of the day and night including overnight hours. This is not rocket science. They know how many people they strand there at night when the last bus leaves & how many people rode the PATH that now depend on NJT to get to work and they are failing abysmally.

Port Authority is really failing us. Last night at 11:30PM, I got in line at the terminal for the 126 bus to Hoboken. There was no 11:30PM bus, or 11:45PM bus. There were no supervisers at the service desk to ask about the schedule. No schedule was posted at the gate, other than buses left at the nighttime location "from 10PM to 1AM."
Finally I asked a maintenance man, on behalf of the 150 or so people in our line, when the next bus was. He directed me outside to the loading platforms, where a short, older black lady who was the supervisor, had been hanging out all that time, talking to other employees. Where is the concern for helping commuters?
I was able to return to the line to announce that the bus was leaving at 12AM, but I'm not sure everyone was able to get on it. The rest of the people in line needed to know when the subsequent bus was going to leave. Please help us get Port Authority to step up and actually supervise these lines!

Lodge a complaint w/ NJT on their website. Also reach out to the mayor. The complaint online is probably a waste of time and the mayor can't do much more than complain to NJT or the governor herself but if enough people complain, perhaps NJT will get their act together before 2020.

Path is open between Journal Square and 33rd with the exception of the Christopher St and 9th St stations...however, during the morning rush hour commute it is a complete disaster. If you can manage to get on the train (it took me 3 trains this morning just to get onboard), you will be packed in like a sardine. I have been packed onto many trains before, so I'm used to it, but I have never experienced it this bad. Then my train skipped my 23rd St stop and went directly to 33rd because there was a medical emergency on the train (probably due to the overcrowding).

If you leave earlier, it is not so crowded. I got on the first train that came into Pavonia, it was crowded, but people were actually getting off at Pavonia so everyone got on the train. Granted it was 7:15am, but I was in my office mid-town manhattan at 8am, relaxing with my coffee.

Why not discounted ferry service to WFC? I work down near Canal St and take NJT to Hoboken on the PVL line. When I get to Hoboken, I can walk to Newport, but everyone says it's horribly crowded. But even so, that train goes north to midtown. I'd have to get off at 14th st and take a subway south, then do the reverse at night and maybe catch a train home.
My other option is ferry to midtown at $5 each way, which is still more than double what Path cost me or $6 each way to WFC. And no thanks on taking a bus to PA. That place is a nightmare, and takes me even further north than I need. Port Authority is not helping us get through this very well and it's frustrating.

Do you work down in the financial district? From my understanding, pretty much everything is closed down there. My girlfriend's office is still closed from flooding and a friend of mine who lives down there won't be allowed back in his apartment building for at least another 2 months.

No, I work near Canal St, where Tribeca and SoHo meet. I usually take PATH to WTC and either walk to work or if weather is bad take the E train 1 stop. The ferry to World Financial center is the most convenient for me to take, but costs about triple what the path costs.why is there no cross-honoring of Smartlink on the ferry?

That is a good question...have you checked if they are offering a deal on that ferry for PATH riders? Honestly, every single route is screwed up right now and it is taking everyone a long time to get to work. You may end up just having to take one of those longer, less convenient means of transportation. I take the light rail to PATH to 23rd from JC Heights and it usually takes me 40 minutes door to door. Between detours, delays, and altered train schedules, it is now taking me about an hour and a half. And on top of that, I have to deal with huge crowds on the trains. I think we need to just realize that the transit companies are not going to do much to help us out (is it really that surprising?), so we gotta suck it up and do what we gotta do to get back to work.

NJT could have gotten the windfall if they ran more buses. But they don't so people fed up w/ the lines and being stranded by NJT are paying more to take the ferry.

Ojo Rojo - I do not believe NJT could get a windfall because they probably do not have extra buses and drivers sitting around. However, the ferries that were 40-50% full prior to the hurricane are now 60-80% full.....they are running the same number of ferries, but ridership is exponentially greater!

They don't have the extra buses? They certainly have them at non-peak times like late at night. Most of their buses are parked and completely unused after 10 PM. And there are plenty of charter buses and tour buses they aren't at all using they could hire. NJT could get creative and find more ways to accommodate passengers from Hoboken but they haven't even bothered to try. And they are doing absolutely nothing about accommodating people at night when the only option is an expensive cab or a massive line at the PA that is so long it guarantees not everyone will make it on the last bus home at 2 AM. Remember there is absolutely no PATH service after 10 even to JC and we all know tons of people ride the PATH b/w 10 AM and 6 AM nightly both here and in JC.
This is my suggestion for NJT. Hire some charter buses to just run an express bus b/w PA and the PATH station and just run a couple of those buses as fast as you can 24/7 in addition to your normal Hoboken schedule. You can sell tickets for cash at $3 a person and more than cover the cost of hiring the charter bus. Do that and you might get halfway to actually picking up the slack for the lost PATH service and also generate some serious cash flow.

There should be a free shuttle from Hoboken to Newport. Screw the light rail...another 2 bucks and in the amount of time you waited, you could have walked there. I've been getting home at 830-9pm for the last week. Not a cab in sight at Newport.

I got on the light rail at 7:05am, arrived Pavionia at 7:10am and was on the Path to 33rd Street by 7:15am. Arrived 33rd at 7:30am. It beats the bus, and cheaper than the ferry.

Brad - the article from 2010 states that metal plates were being installed to support the structure of the tunnel so that if there were ever a "catastrophic" bombing in the PATH that the structure would remain and it wouldnt puncture a hole, allowing millions of gallons of water to flood the tunnels. I don't think this would have helped in regards to Hurriance Sandy.
Does anyone have insider information on when the Hoboken path may open again? Doens't matter how you slice the bread, all means of Hobo/NYC transportation right now suck.

I live in Bayonne, NJ and I usually take the light rail to Hoboken Terminal to catch the PATH. Since that station is still closed I'm going to try and take the PATH from Newport, can anyone tell me how bad the crowding is because I take my 6 month old son with me and I definitely dont want anyone bumping into him.
