Hoboken to Receive $5G Grant for Bike Corrals

The Bikes Belong Coalition is awarding the money.

Hoboken is the recipient of a $5,000 grant to install pilot bike corrals, the city of Hoboken announced. The program will feature at least three on-street bike corrals which will each hold between 10 and 24 bicycles.

Mayor Dawn Zimmer, a fervent biker herself, said she is "very pleased Hoboken is moving ahead with this innovative approach to address the increased need for bicycle parking and that we’re able to do it through grant funding."

Director of Transportation and Parking Ian Sacs, who has focusesd on making Hoboken biker-friendly, said the corrals will improve visibility for drivers and pedestrians.

"This infrastructure reallocates previously unused street space to better accommodate the mobility of all our residents," Sacs said.

Modeled on other cities’ sponsorship programs, the city is inviting businesses to apply for a bike corral near their business. As part of the pilot program, the City will pay to install the corrals with the grant funding, and through a maintenance agreement, the adjacent business or property owner will be required to keep the corral free of debris, oversee snow removal and inform the City of structural issues or damages.
