How to Celebrate Frank Sinatra's Birthday

Sunday marks the 95th birthday 0f Hoboken's most famous resident, Frank Sinatra. Of course, the city is celebrating. Here are two great events to attend this weekend:
On Saturday music archivist Bill Shelley will pull from his personal vault to present rare footage in a collection entitled The Legend & Legacy of Frank Sinatra.
This is the third and final installment of Shelley's Music Legends Live on Film Series, which is a joint production along with the City of Hoboken, Projected Images of Hudson County and the Stevens Institute of Technology Division of Technology and the Arts to benefit the Movies Under the Stars program returning in the summer of 2011.
Shelley's footage will show performances of all of Sinatra's biggest hits, as well as special clips from some of the singer's forays into making Hollywood movies. Look also for concert footage of Sinatra singing with some of the most famous acts in history, including Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Kelly, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, and Elvis Presley.
After the screening Shelley will stand for a question and answer session with the audience. Following that, the Alternative Controller Ensemble, a band of students in the Stevens Music & Technology Program, will perform.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the DeBaun Auditorium on 5th Street between Hudson Street and River Terrace. If you buy tickets in advance they cost $12, otherwise $15 at the door.
Then, on Sunday, James Kaplan, author of the latest Sinatra biography, The Voice, will speak to patrons in a free event at the Hoboken Historical Museum.
Kaplan will read from The Voice beginning at 4 p.m. The Museum will provide refreshments and will sample some Sinatra songs for entertainment.

First they'll wrap presents, then they'll mentor
If you plan on doing some holiday gift shopping this weekend, volunteers from True Mentors, a new Hoboken based mentoring program for students in grades 5-12, will offer free gift wrapping services inside 716 Washington Street.
That property, owned by real estate agent Barbara Tulko, has formerly served as a storefront, and most recently has hosted art shows for the Hob'Art cooperative gallery. Tulko is donating the space for True Mentors to build its presence within the community as it prepares to formally launch in January 2011.
The group does so far have a website and it is currently accepting applications from residents interested in mentoring students.
True Mentor volunteers will provide the wrapping service, complete with bows and name tags, on Saturday from 10am to 6pm.
Never Before Seen Footage
Though he's been crisscrossing the country to speak about education reform, Hoboken media maker Bob Bowdon is still promoting his film expose on problems in public schools, The Cartel. He's just released some bonus footage not seen in the theatrical version, as well as a special video endorsement from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.
