In Running for Re-election, Freeholder Wants to Improve Communication
Anthony Romano is running for a second term.
Contrary to popular belief, Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Romano's nickname "Stick" has nothing to do with the nightstick he used to carry as a Hoboken police captain for many years.
Leaning back in a chair recently in his small campaign headquarters—and civic association to be—on Washington Street, Romano explained it has to do with the many years playing stickball as a child growing up in Hoboken.
Although the game has changed from stickball to local politics, the nickname stuck.
Romano is up for re-election on Tuesday, in the race for Hudson County Freeholder. Running against him is Hobokenite and political blogger Kurt Gardiner. Romano is running with the support of the Hudson County Democratic Organization in column A with Assemblyman Ruben Ramos, County executive Tom DeGise and assembly candidate Sean Connors.
The main thing he wants to work on if re-elected to a second term, Romano said, is the relationship with municipal government, adding that he'd like to be more included in the city's plans.
"Let's be candid," Romano said. "They do things first and they bring me in after the fact."
Romano has a list of things he is proud of the county's accomplishments in the last three years, such as fixing the uptown sinkhole and helping out the city after last year's major Christmas snowstorm. He said in the future he wants to make sure the county resurfaces Observer Highway.
Romano said he would like to see a field in Hoboken on which sports can be played. "There aren't any fields along the waterfront," he said. "I play in Weehawken."
Romano's ultimate dream, however, is to open a county wide police academy. He retired from the Hoboken police department in April 2010 after working there for 32 years, after it became evident he would have to be demoted from captain to sergeant.
"I wasn't going to take a demotion," Romano said. When asked if he misses being a Hoboken cop, Romano fell silent and grew emotional. "I still miss it," he said, eyes watering up. "It was my life."
The buzz from his blackberry—which rings about every five minutes—snapped Romano out of it.
His police background, Romano continued, has helped him in being a freeholder. "I listen, watch, learn before I speak," he said. "Dialogue is important."
The nine-person board of Freeholders has public meetings twice a month as well as two caucus meetings.
After growing up on 10th and Willow Streets, Romano now lives in Marineview and is the father of a 33-year-old son, Angel Romano.
The Freeholder also inherited Louise and Jerry's—one of Hoboken's oldest bars—from his family. Across the street at 321 Washington St., he said he plans to open the Anthony L. Romano Civic Association. On Cableview, Romano is the host of "Stick at Night," which originated after he did an interview on Meet the Leaders a few years ago.
When asked why he's running again, Romano—who also served on the Hoboken Board of Education for seven years—said he has started to "enjoy the operations of county government." And much like his opponent, he said he wants to show people what county government does and why it's important. "It's not a patronage mill," Romano said, "it provides services."
But according to word on Hoboken's streets, Romano could be contemplating a mayoral run in 2013, which would cut his term as freeholder short (a potential scenario on which Gardiner has been campaigning).
When asked if he wants to be mayor, Romano laughed.
"I don't believe in rumors," he said, smiling. "I don't know what the future will bring."

Hello prosbus, I can see that you are very busy, but would you please take a moment and try answering some of the questions I have posed? I have presented them in a manner that is germane to your preferred topic of discussion, and I stand in tremendous deference to your keen insight into Hoboken politics and intellectual perspective of various occurrences.
Do you have any knowledge of whether in the ongoing FBI investigation, in which Mr. Romano's "Italian Woman of the Year" is rumored to be a "person of interest," any political-operative efforts perpetrated by this Lane Bajardi fellow have led to any interest in Mason? Has Mr. Bajardi been interviewed by any FBI agents? Have his activities been the subject of any FBI interviews? Is it true that Mr. Bajardi and his wife Kim sought to parlay their support for Elizabeth Mason and Peter Cammarano into City Hall employment? Have either of them collected any monetary compensation for any of their political-operative efforts?
Thank you very much, prosbus. I do not mean to distract your from your efforts making your case for your candidate, but this is quite germane.

The County political bosses have reported filled "Stick: Romano's re-election campaign war chest to an astounding $107,000,000.00 , $5,000.00 of which comes from the Masons.
Jamie Cryan who ran the now infamous Occhipinti 4th Ward campaigns that used $30,000,00 of Ricky and Beth Mason's money to hire over 500 election day street workers is also running "Stick" Romano's re-election campaign. Can we expect more of the same from the same people ?
In his short tenure as Freeholder Romano has voted to increase taxes three times.
All that and more makes you wonder should Hoboken stick with "Stick" or would they be better off shaking up the Hudson County political machine and vote for KURT GARDINER.

Romano should really be getting hammered for taking part in one of the most atrocious episodes in recent Hudson County political history--the elimination of all interscholastic sports last year at Hi-Tech High and County Prep merely because the North Bergen mayor was ticked off that a star basketball player was going to Hi-Tech. In an amazing fit of rage and immaturity, the mayor took revenge by getting every other mayor in Hudson--including Dawn--to sign a letter to the freeholders demanding that sports be ended and then got the freeholders to do it. Softball, baseball, basketball and track teams were eliminated overnight, high school sports careers that might have led to college scholarships were cut short, traditions decades in the making were thrown away, kids who could use the outlet that sports offers no longer had that outlet (though they are able to play for their high school in their town, very difficult given the long commute from High-Tech). Romano should be ashamed and embarrassed over being party to this. He says he helped kids on the school board and he says he wants a sports field in Hoboken, but his words ring hollow. And of course Dawn is all about biking and other outdoor activities but she sold the kids out when the Hudson Dem machine came around. These two did immeasurable damage to hundreds of kids, both the current students and the future ones. And as Hobbs points out, Romano voted for higher taxes three times. Maybe Gardiner is the choice.
Enough
12:04 pm on Tuesday, November 8, 2011
frank, I agree with you on this one, but have to put it in context. First, as you mentioned, the freeholders had a letter signed by every county mayor supporting the cut (except Healy who later recanted). They were looking for cuts to the budget and unfortunately, kids don't vote, so the ax fell on them. I voiced my displeasure to Romano after that vote, as I have a couple of other times when I have disagreed with him.
It is incorrect to say that he voted for higher taxes three times. He voted "no" his first two years in office, and this year he was on the budget committee. He seems to be taking cues from Bill O'Dea, who is a very independent guy on the freeholder board, and he was the lone vote against cutting the county schools sports. If Romano is listening to O'Dea, that's a good thing.
Either way, Romano is a better choice than Gardiner, who is mean spirited and ignorant. There's enough of that around here already.

The Hudson County Political bosses never intended to have anyone run against Romano and just slip the "Stick" back into office real quiet like. They tried to ignore Kurt Gardiner entering the race for Freeholder and now they are in full attack mode already spending $80,000.00 plus !

I have a hard time believing Mr. Romano's statements that he wants to work with others in the City governmental process, when his entire interview was about reinforcing his position with one increasingly isolated segment of the population now living in Hoboken that does not want work cooperatively and has been detrimental to the City as a whole.
