First Phase Of Renovation Complete At Legion Park

Mayor says the community will be asked to help with planning for the next phase.

The city presented the results of the first phase of renovations at Legion Park, near the corner of Willow Avenue and 13th Street, on Tuesday.

Legion is one of three parks whose improvements were bid together to save money. The other two parks, and , also recently reopened. Together, the renovations at all three parks cost $239,550.

“We wanted to be sure we got it done with the other two parks that were done and before the summer,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer.

She added that there would be a public meeting before the next phase of renovations at Legion Park.

“I am going to want to hear the community’s feedback on what they would like to have remain and what they would like to see changed and how we can make it more of a space that perhaps some of the older kids can use too,” said Zimmer. Legion Park, she said, is supposed to be for kids up to 12 years old.

The park’s new design includes a large single piece of equipment that meets all the safety requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to Health and Human Services Director Leo Pellegrini. The park’s original patio and mural were left untouched.

“It was more of a renovation of the equipment, but it still needs some work,” said Pellegrini.

City officials also have plans to make improvements to some of the larger parks like Church Square Park, Elysian Park, and Stevens Park. “I feel like we are activating neighborhoods,” said Zimmer. She added that she’s gotten a lot of positive feedback from residents saying they finally have outdoor space to enjoy.

As Legion Park is in the second ward, Council Member Beth Mason was also at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “I am glad it’s a start,” she said, “and I am glad I worked with the mayor to help get the bonding for the parks.” She added that she would also work to get residents’ input on what they’d like to see done with their park space.
