Kicking for a Cause

Zog Sports held a kickball match that helped raise money for a local charity.

Most people haven't played kickball since their playground days, but on Thursday evening, the childhood sport was revived in Hoboken. For a good cause. Zog Sports held their spring championship playoffs, and eight teams were whittled down to two ultimate winners.

Zog Sports is a recreational sports league for adults to meet, play and then share a drink afterward. They run leagues for wiffleball, bowling and soccer, among others. But what sets Zog Sports apart from other leagues is that each team plays for a charity of its choosing. When the team wins, so does its charity. It's all summed up in the Zog's tagline; "Play for your cause."

"The only reason I play is for charity. I'm no good at kickball!" laughed Lauren Parisi, a player whose team, "Get Naked," won their first round to make it to the semi-finals.

"We try to offer something for everyone, and we offer different skill levels so everyone has fun," said Chris Corbin, who runs the New Jersey branch of Zog Sports.

While there are Zog Sports leagues all over New Jersey and New York, in Hoboken, there's a catch: if the team plays on the Hoboken Housing Authority's field, why not give the HHA a team? And so the orange team—named simply "HHA"—was born.

The team is open to any resident with spirit and determination.

"They wanted people from HHA and outside to come together to play," said Rami Pinchevsky, of the HHA team.

During its first match, HHA beat the maroon team, called "Adios Pantalones!" While the maroon team clapped politely for their teammates, the HHA team whistled and cheered, shouting encouragements to each other. There was even a fan section, where their friends had set up folding chairs to watch the action.

"Jubilee, here we come!" shouted David Sted, a member of the HHA team until he broke his ankle, referring to The Jubilee Center, the team's charity of choice. Sted was dubbed the unofficial "mascot" of the game, shouting encouragement and waving his crutches around in the air.

One by one, the teams were eliminated until four were left standing, and two games were played to see who would be the best in each class. HHA played "You Look Like I Need A Drink," and "Get Naked" played "With Ourselves" (get it?).

Get Naked trampled With Ourselves 3-0 in what seemed like a quick game, but it was the match up between HHA and You Look Like I Need A Drink that got the crowd of onlookers pumped.

The competition became fierce as the night wore on. "We're the team that never bunts! Not even the girls!" exclaimed Mo Gaffney, from You Look Like I Need A Drink.

"Jubilee Center, we're about to win this!" said Joe Johnson, coach for the HHA team.

And in the end, they did, with HHA beating out the competition 9-4. Their win earned The Jubilee Center a cool $350 (and still netted the runner-up team $250 for their cause, The Traumatic Brain Injury Fund).

The HHA team huddled together for a group hug and high five, before both teams shook hands.

"We're looking forward to repeating this in the fall season," said Pinchevsky.

Soon all of the teams would head to Lounge 11 for a special Zog Sports Happy Hour, really putting the "social" in "social league."

But for a minute, Tony Zabaleta of the HHA team pondered their win. "The kids (at The Jubilee Center) grow up in the same sort of situation I did, so this is great for them."

Zog Sports' summer season begins June 15. The kickball league is sold out, but registration for touch football, dodgeball and basketball is open through Sunday. Register online.

With Ourselves actually beat Get Naked to finish a perfect 9-0.

Thanks for the correction! Unfortunately I didn't get over to the other side of the field quick enough to catch the end of that match.
