Lautenberg Fights for Planned Parenthood
Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) appeared before a supportive crowd of press and locals at City Hall Friday.
U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg announced the Susan G. Komen's Foundation decision to restore funding to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings, after having announced last week that it would end its relationship with the organization due to its being under investigation in front of Hoboken City Hall on Friday afternoon.
Last week, Lautenberg lead a group of 26 Senators in a letter calling on the Komen Foundation to reconsider its decision to stop funding cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood. In the letter, the Senators urged the Komen foundation to reconsider their decision on the grounds that "this troubling decision threatens to reduce access to necessary, life saving services.... it would be tragic if any woman—let alone thousands of women lost access to these potentially life-saving screenings because of a politically motivated attack.”
After being introduced by Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer, Lautenberg greeted the crowd at City Hall.
"Today, the interests of women health prevailed over partisan politics. The Komen foundation did the right thing," Lautenberg said.
"He's been a strong leader on women's health issues," Zimmer said about the senator.
The Senator went on to say that he was "pleased to say that this crisis is behind us and Planned Parenthood can continue trying to protect women’s health."
"I want my granddaughters to grow up in a world where breast cancer is nothing more than a bad memory," Lautenberg said. "But we’re not going to achieve it if we allow the dream to be disturbed by others playing politics with women’s health."
