Letter to the Editor: Democratic Chairman Jamie Cryan

Jamie Cryan speaks out about Hoboken St. Patrick's Day.

Dear Editor:

As a first generation American with Irish roots, I consider St. Patrick's Day, and the festivities surrounding this occasion, as a source of great pride. My parents story is the classic tail of immigrants from any land -- they came to America with little money in their pockets but a big dream of being able to offer their children a better way life. Their American dream was celebrated every day, by teaching their children to love this great country and to serve in any capacity in order to give back what was gifted to us. Our American dream was further celebrated every March when we honor our heritage.

I was saddened when the Hoboken St. Patrick's Day Parade was cancelled because of "public safety concerns".

For more than a quarter century, The Hoboken St. Patrick's Day Parade has achieved the great honor of kicking off the parade season in New Jersey on the first Saturday in March, allowing new and old residents to share in a great tradition. For decades, Hoboken Irish and Irish Americans have marched down the Avenue with a fitting sense of pride for home and heritage and a sense of duty to remember the harsh times and prejudice Irish Americans experienced when "No Irish Need Apply".

I came home yesterday to find a "no tolerance" warning on my buildings front door and I received a Robo call from Chief Falco stating all officers will be on duty and 140 from other jurisdictions would be assisting. This is great news for public safety concerns, and very similar to the blanket warnings received every year leading up to the first Saturday in March.

So it seems the only real change this weekend will be that the Irish will not be allowed to march, and Hoboken families will not be able to enjoy a parade. Were high school marching bands, Irish American Associations, local charitable groups and civic associations the "public safety concern"?

Hopefully next year will bring a better plan for this proud Hoboken tradition. One in which those with good intentions don't suffer.

Best,

Jamie Cryan
Hoboken Democratic Chairman
