Louise and Jerry's: A Hoboken Classic

For more than 50 years, this neighborhood standby has been pouring drinks cheap. I ducked in from the rain for a few.

It was an awful, rainy day and I needed a drink. The only problem was, it was barely Happy Hour, let alone barely opening time for most bars in Hoboken. So, armed with an umbrella and wearing flimsy canvas shoes that were soon soaked, I found myself traipsing around town, dragging a friend along (yeah, he loved that).

There was one lonely dude drinking at the bar at Trinity, and at McSwiggans, the bartender looked like she was just taking the stools off of the bar. But alas! Walking past Louise and Jerry’s, we noticed a couple of dudes sitting at the bar. I’ve never reviewed Louise and Jerry’s? I thought to myself. OK, it’s decided. Let’s go in.

Louise and Jerry’s is owned by Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Romano, who inherited the 50-year-old bar from his family. A reviewer on Yelp remembers the place in the late 70s and 80s, when beers were apparently a nickel, and Louise herself would tend bar.

Stepping down into the bar, it was dark, but warm. A couple of guys who looked like they were in bands were sitting at the bar, drinking bottles of beer. The music was 60s and 70s folk-tinged rock, and on the television screen was not a sporting event – no, it was the 1962 classic “How The West Was Won.”

The large, bearded bartender asked us how we were doing and what he could get for us. We ordered Yuengling’s because they were $3, but they also had Happy Hour draft specials on Blue Moon, Stella, Newcastle and Guinness.

The décor at Louise and Jerry’s is reminiscent of a basement rec room from the 70s, with brick walls, dim lighting from stained glass lamps, a jukebox sans dance music and Justin Bieber, and a pool table that only costs a buck to play. Around the bar are old American flags, trophies and ancient beer advertisements (one, a light-up sign for Budweiser featuring a yacht on open waters had me signing to myself, “This is the life I should be living”).

My companion fell in love with Louise and Jerry’s when he overheard the other bar patrons talking about New Jersey’s punk-rock golden boy, Ted Leo, and when the jukebox began to play a Flying Burrito Brothers song.

I fell in love when I overheard someone exclaim, "He was cooking foie gras on the third rail!"

“I didn’t know there were places in Hoboken that weren’t full of frat boys or yuppies in suits,” my friend said. I wanted to laugh and immediately take him on a tour of the likes of DC’s, Northern Soul, Maxwell’s and Coopers Union. But like I said, it was pouring and freezing, so we stayed put and ordered more beers.

But Louise and Jerry’s is a gem in it’s own right. I’ve been there loads of times over the years, from Jets games to St. Patrick’s Day, to simply unwinding with my colleagues over a cold beer. It’s a great unpretentious spot full of old-timers and rock ‘n rollers. The bartender even offered us a buyback drink, something that I’ve probably only gotten very few times in Hoboken. Unfortunately, my friend was now running late to a show in the city. Still, some of the new bars could take tips from Louise and Jerry’s. In all, after a fun evening of drinking, I’ll award them a solid nine frosty mugs.

Louise and Jerry’s, 329 Washington Street; (201) 656-9698.

There is an appreciation for louise and jerry's locally. It has a great dive feeling and in Hoboken the laid back, oldies on a juke box type places are a mere handful. Here, DC's, Wilton House all attract the local's and never are there any fights. All great places to take $40 and enjoy your evening and have car fare money to get you home without the worry or out of towner's causing problems.

Please realize by patronizing this establishment you are underwriting Freeholder Romano, who is no friend to the Hoboken taxpayer.

What does it matter where Stick stands? I am the first to I love / hate every politician in this town, but this is a bar not an election. The atmosphere is great, the bartenders are quick and friendly, there is never a nuisance and the prices are great in a tough economic state. This is the same as saying you should not patronize a restaurant or retailer because they had a Zimmer for Mayor or Mason for Mayor sign in their window. For all the people that dislike Mayor Zimmer, should they not eat somewhere that had her signs? Anthony Romano might be under scrutiny for his beliefs but at the end of the day he is like every other business owner in town, he is trying to earn a living. Political threads I understand people's personal feelings but this is about a business in a city that is really feeling a crunch, many of us business owners are really feeling the hit. Anthony Romano for over 2 decades put his own life on the line to protect the well being of all of us, when gun fire erupted he was there to serve the city and risk his life, I don't hear anyone mentioning this ever?

He owns the bar. A little different than a sign in the window. Hope that job with the county works out for you.

2 decades putting his life on the line? Correct me if I am wrong but he spent about a decade of that time just driving around our mayor. Right? I give him props for being out there that 1st decade but I want a refund on the time he spent as a chauffeur.

He was at high risk of being caught in the cross-fire of an egging driving him around.

I would not spend a cent in this joint. I've watched Stick hit on anything in a skirt and he's a terrible freeloader, ahem, freeholder.

Agreed, knowing now that Stick Romano owns L&J's most definitely wipes it off the list of businesses in Hoboken that I will frequent in the future.

Just the other day Leo's held a party for certain people and all of a sudden people on blogs won't go to Leo's. Leo's sadly took on about 75k in flood damage from Irene and insurance I believe did not cover it. It's very sad that many of you just keeping bashing away based on the beliefs of others, ruin their businesses because you don't like their opinions. It's one thing to address the concerns in a thread solely based on politics but when you drag people's businesses in to the picture it's unprofessional. I eat in a lot of places people i do not like frequent regularly, should i do what Leo's admirers do and not go there? If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say "I will never move to Hoboken based on what I read on blogs" I'd be a millionaire.

If they were paid by the Occhipinti crowd to host a fundraiser, that isn't so bad. The place is a business and private events are money makers. I would never go to the event but I also wouldn't DQ the guy from my business if he hosted it. But if the event was an in kind contribution to Timmay, that is an entirely different can of worms.

Leo's is in the hole from the hurricane, guy is a local staple of the business community. Guy has a family to feed and kids to cloth. You don't bring him down just because he wants to host a party! Leave people's businesses out of this bashing. You want to speak about the person then speak about the person and not his / her business.

Rory, did you bother to read my post? I already said I don't care much if he was paid to host a party. The man is running a business so if someone pays him to host an event, it isn't a big deal. In kind contributions are a completely different story. That is no different than giving the guy money IMO.

And you might want to keep this in mind. When it comes to freedom to do as a person wishes, us customers have just as much right to decide where, why and how we spend our money as you business owners do. If you or other business owners wish to donate your money to someone like Timmay, then don't be surprised if the customers who put that money in your pocket by patronizing your business decide to go elsewhere.

Red, my reply is not directed towards you, it's a generalized statement. I donate to the homeless shelter, that's it. I don't give anyone my money, thats a lie, my girlfriend gets it all lol. I just think business and politics should remain separate. If i knew your name and slammed you or anyone else around about their business or what they do, I do not think it would be appreciated? There is a time and a place for everything. Because some guy hits on woman and has opinions doesn't mean his establishment offers bad service. If you want to go after someone go after them not the business. Aside from an owner, establishments have employees who rely on good business to pay their wages, shooting down a business because of who owns it effects everyone their, not just the owner.

The way I interpret (and agree with) Redrider765's statements is that doing business is fine. The minute a business hosts an event for a politician and does not charge them, the event goes into the elec report as an In Kind contribution - the business owner at that point has mixed business with politics and let the chips fall where them may.

Everyone with a business in town the donates prizes to Scott Delea for PWOP or to Tim Occhipinti for Hoboken Volunteers, should they be under the knife too? Both are either politicians and or want to be one.

That's absurd. Rory gives back to the community and is very vocal about many important issues. He's not some creep just trying to leach off our tax dollars or on the take.

Heh, thanks. My problem with Louise & Jerry's is Stick OWNS the place. So that's me giving him money for his personal use. I don't want to contribute to his campaigns, his lifestyle or his politrickin'. I work hard for my dollars and I decide who gets the benefit of what I'm willing to spend in town. I'd rather reward Clinton Social, 340 Grill, O'Niealls, Pourhouse, McSwiggins, Mulligans, Tilted Kilt, Augostino's, Anthony David's, Hudson Tavern, Melting Pot or Trinity with my dollars than anything owned by Stick.

I agree with Red on Leo's. If he got paid, good for him, if he contributed, goodbye.

So not only does Stick draw what most likely is a healthy pension from the Hoboken citizenry, but he also owns a bar in town. In spite of these two significant sources of income, he squats in subsidized housing, making this the third method for him to send the bills for his personal life to the Hoboken citizens. This leaves me wondering whether he also owns commercial real estate here.

Yes, Anthony L Romano Jr ( this is Stick, I checked his FB page) owns 329-331 WASHINGTON ST (building where L&Js is, I believe). Bought in 2005. His taxes got reassessed 15K higher this year than the last several years, so he's actually going to pay 40K in taxes this year. Previously he paid around 24.5K He's listed as living in Marine View Towers (subsidized housing, no?).

Just keep politics to the politics threads and keep businesses out. If you have a bad experience in town then there is a proper format for leaving your reviews. If they want to attack me then that's on them I just would love to have a great business community here in Hoboken and we can if people keep politics as politics and business as business. Everyone in town is struggling and it really sucks. I see friends go under every month and I feel their pain. Every last cent gone over a dream, that's hard to swallow for anyone. When people come out here and bash one another it only makes us look bad to those local and from abroad. If businesses flourish then maybe one day everyone will be in business for a long time, no empty store fronts, higher property values and so on. Bashing in any regard just puts a hurt on everyone, not just the establishment targeted. I don't really care about politics, i like and dislike everyone, I want to earn a living, that's it and the less hanky panky on the blogs the better, that's it!

When a business owner crosses the line into politics then I think it is fair to view him/her and her bussiness as political.

That said I have always tried to patronize local buisnesses.

I patronize L&Js to underwrite the best bartenders, and the best bar, in town. I don't agree with Anthony on a lot of things, but he's got one of the few remaining places in town that don't cater to frat kids and weekend Jersey Shore rejects.

I can't abide the 'I don't agree with you on local politics, so I'm going to run you out of business!' mentality, it's too small of a community to go around actively hating people. Sticking to your convictions is one thing, unreasonable stubbornness to the point of injuring your own interests is another. If you paint political opponents as the devil, how will you look when you have to work together on something? I think it was Tip O'Neil that said he and Reagan would get into screaming matches in the Oval Office, right up until 7 o'clock when then cocktails came out, then they'd sit together and get sloshed. Stick's a decent guy who's dedicated his life to the town, and I respect him for that, even though I disagree with him.

So, enjoy your overpriced beers and the 758 TVs over at Tilted Kilt. Enjoy being served by teenagers paid to dress like sluts specifically to keep your hairy, old, chicken-part-devouring ass there to ogle them for one more beer, guilt free. Revel in knowing money spent there goes back into the community, and by that I mean back to the community of their headquarters in Las Vegas. I'll stick with Hoboken's own Louise and Jerry's.
