Luxury Condo Owner Looks to Sell, Donate Proceeds to Charity

The owner of a custom penthouse at the Sky Club expects to donate close to $800,000 to the Oasis Foundation.

If you're looking for a new home, and you've got an extra $800,000 in your bank account, you can own a luxurious, custom-designed two bedroom, two bathroom penthouse condo at the Sky Club. On top of settling into one of the swankiest pads in Hoboken, you'd also help make a huge donation to a charitable cause. The current owner of the condo plans to give the entire post-commission sale price to the Oasis haven for women and children in Paterson.

The condo is one of only two unique footprint units in the entire building shooting up 17 floors at 700 First Street, the other occupied by the original developer of the Sky Club, Sandy Weiss. The owner, who works in finance and who wishes to remain anonymous, lived in the condo from the time the Sky Club opened until 2010 when he moved to Bergen County.

Not needing the condo anymore, the owner decided to sell. But rather than keep the money he has decided to donate everything to Oasis, a charity he has previously served as a donor and volunteer.

“I know they could use the help. They do real good stuff over there,” the owner said.

According to Jennifer Brady, who is President of the Oasis Board of Trustees, the money will help the organization maintain and expand its social programs for women and children from impoverished socioeconomic backgrounds.

“Most of the women and children we serve come to us hungry,” Brady said. “For them just coming to us is an accomplishment.”

Oasis serves over 600 women and children every day. It maintains a soup kitchen, provides health care, shields women from domestic and substance abuse, helps them earn a GED or learn English as a second language, teaches computer skills and prepares them to find jobs.

The shelter runs preschool and afterschool programs for almost 200 children, giving them hot meals, help with homework, and, as Brady said, a safe haven away from drugs and gangs. Oasis also runs a full 12-week summer camp.

Brady said the money from the condo sale will support a variety of existing programs and enable Oasis to expand its scope of services, especially educationally.

“This dropped out of the sky for us,” she said. “Our prayers have been answered. To have these funds come to us means we don't have to turn anyone away.”

According to a fact sheet from Oasis, if the condo sells at its listing price the donation alone would fund the foundation's operations for more than half a year.

The realtor the owner has hired to sell the condo, Nicole Magana from Boutique Realty, said the condo is attractive because of its custom furnishings and unique 1,950 square foot floor plan.

“You know you're living in a custom built home that's larger than the majority of other homes in Hoboken,” Magana said.

Virtually every detail in the high-ceiling, hardwood floor condo is customized and made of top quality material, from the several thousand dollar Italian drapes, included with the sale, to the ornate door handles and cabinet knobs.

The master bedroom, which has its own thermostat, includes a large walk-in closet with ample shelving and organized drawers. The second bedroom, featuring built-in shelves and reading bench is illuminated by a delicate chandelier.

The entire condo is wired for surround-sound, with the ideal place for a flat screen television above the mahogany fireplace in the living room.

The gourmet kitchen features top-shelf appliances, including a Viking stove, a Subzero refrigerator and a built-in climate controlled wine cooler.

The home offers plenty of natural light with floor to ceiling windows. The new owners will be able to enjoy far scenic views from two spacious terraces.

There is even a perk for potential owners who are football fans. The condo features two carved wood columns that were originally in the home of former Giants great Michael Strahan, who is a friend of the owner.

“It's got a real nice layout,” the owner said. “The woodwork fireplace is real nice, and you're getting a great second bedroom there.”

The building includes a 24 hour concierge, fitness center, garage parking and other amenities.

Magana said the current asking price is $829,000. She has shown it to several interested buyers during open house viewings, and said that one potential buyer is an NBA player.

“We're not just negotiating another sale,” Magana said. “Hopefully the buyers will feel good knowing that their purchase is going to a really good cause.”
