Mayor Dawn Zimmer reopened Jefferson Street Park, outside the Hoboken Boys and Girls Club, on her birthday Monday.

Children from the club and adjacent dual language school HoLa sang “Happy Birthday” to the mayor before helping her cut the ribbon.

“This is for the Boys and Girls Club, this is for HoLa, this is for our entire community,” said Zimmer. The mayor added that she would like the park to be a place where people can come after work or after school. She also thanked Health and Human Services Director Leo Pellegrini and City Engineer Joe Pomonte for their work.

Designed by Playworld Systems, the new park has one large piece of equipment where the old design had two smaller separate pieces of equipment. There are now three new slides, monkey bars, climbing walls, a rope and tunnel. Pellegrini said the park meets all the safety requirements specified in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The city is making improvements to several parks this year. Pellegrini said after the mayor asked him to take charge of the park renovations, Jefferson Street Park was his first project. “It’s just a great feeling to see it from the start to the end, to see how it was completed,” he said. and Legion Park will reopen today at 4 p.m.
