Midtown Authentic Moving, But Not Far

The clothing boutique will move upstairs in its current building at 728 Washington Street.

Clothing boutique Midtown Authentic is moving from the basement to the penthouse. Sort of.

The store will soon move its luxury consignment merchandise from its current location in the basement of 728 Washington St. to the second floor of the building. will continue to occupy the ground floor, while an apartment exists on the third and top floor.

Owner Rory Chadwick said the reasons behind the move are to increase Midtown's presence and to also take advantage of a significantly larger floor plan.

“A lot of people were coming up to me saying I didn't know you were here,” he said.

Up until now customers have had to walk down steps behind a white wall to enter the Midtown front door. The store's only sign visible on the street is a black and white vinyl banner.

Chadwick said the owner of the building had been looking for a new tenant for the second floor space, which was most recently a medical office. Chadwick negotiated with the owner to move his business upstairs. The owner agreed, and is now also looking for a new tenant downstairs.

The new Midtown Authentic will have much more space, including what Chadwick envisions will be two display rooms in the front, a main lounge, another room for shoes, an office and ample storage closets.

The windows of the front display rooms will feature signage as well as mannequins displaying the store's merchandise. Lights will illuminate the windows and mannequins at night. Chadwick said one of the front rooms will feature women's clothing and the other side men's.

“Guys don't have a lot of places to buy clothes in Hoboken,” Chadwick said. “I've always had some to sell but never had any place to put it.”

The renovation project will involve removing the existing carpet and installing hardwood floors, plus new shelves, counters and light fixtures.

Chadwick said he plans to begin the renovation next week, and hopes to be able to move his merchandise upstairs the following week. The basement will remain open for business until then.

Chadwick also said he is interested in opening a second store and is scouting locations in New Jersey. He has been in business since 2009.

Coming soon: new gyms, an Indian restaurant opens and a jeweler moves.
