More than 100 Dogs Party in Church Square Park

Hoboken Grace Hosted the 3rd Annual Free Dog Party in Church Square Park on Saturday morning.

On Saturday morning, it was time for Hoboken's dogs to have a good time.

More than 100 dogs (and their owners) gathered at the dog park in Church Square Park Saturday morning at the 3rd annual Dog Party, a free event hosted by Hoboken Grace.

For two hours, starting at 10 a.m., dogs of all sizes sloshed through kiddie pools, ran around the dog run, drank from the fountain and competed for the grand prize in several contests, including best costume, highest jump, best trick, best catch and best shaker. The owners of the winning dogs were given gift certificates to local shops, such as Hoboken Unleashed.

"There were about three times as many dogs here as last year," estimated Nick Lenzi, an event volunteer. "Everything was completely free, because we try not to make our events for the church, but for the community.

Lots of kids frolicked around the dog run, tossing soggy tennis balls out for whichever dog could fetch them the quickest. They also enjoyed face painting, sno-cones, popcorn and a Moon Bounce.

Zoe Harrison, 6, and her brother, James, 3, brought their chocolate lab, Dexter.

"It was fun!" Zoe said. "It was much bigger than we expected," added her mom, Dana Harrison. Zoe had paw prints painted on each cheek.

The event wasn't limited to Hobokenites. The Jaludi family, of North Bergen, saw the event listed on-line and decided it would be a good way to spend a Saturday afternoon. They brought along chihuahua J-J and black labrador mix Lola.

"It was a great event," Jennifer Fuda-Jaludi said. "I'm glad we came!"
