Hoboken's First Mutzfest Draws A Sold Out Crowd

And the winners are M&P Biancamano and Vito's Deli.

People waited in a line that stretched two blocks for their chance to vote for the best mozzarella in Hoboken at the first annual Mutzfest.

Hobokenites love their mozzarella. The line that stretched two blocks outside of the Elks Club Sunday afternoon was a testament to just how much.

The first annual Mutzfest drew a sold out crowd to taste and vote for their favorite of five local cheesemakers.

Big winners M&P Biancamano took home both People's Choice and Critic's Choice awards, and Vito's Deli won the Best Sandwich category.

Fran's Deli, Lisa's Deli and Losurdo Brothers Bakery also participated in the event hosted by the Hoboken Family Alliance.

I thought it was really grimy of Biancamano to bring in his Mutz 10 minutes before the judges tried it, everyone else brought theres at the beginning of the day. even the night before some of the guys wanted to have the cheese brought to the elks that night and left overnight until the next day so it would be fair to all and Biancamano said no, yet he brought in his cheese fresh. its really not that big of a deal but to do little crap like that to win a contest no one really cares about is quite pathetic.

This is a wonderful idea that really brings the community together. It's nice to see creative concepts like this to renew social life, giving people a chance to go "off line," de-i-pod and be face-to-face with their neighbors. All within the historic and atmospheric Elks Club, lending a folksy, Norman Rockwell-esqe aura. But what about that famous old Deli downtown, I forget the name of it--I think it's on Adams St--that's also well known for it's Mutz. Did they choose not to participate, or, heaven forbid, were they overlooked?

Bringing the community is exactly what we had in mind, John. Thanks for the note. Regarding your thoughts on other participants: we did in fact invite both Fiore's (the establishment on Adams St. you referenced) and Luca Brasi to participate but neither could because of other commitments. For those who did participate everyone followed the rules and requirements and competed with 100% fairness. We're happy that everyone seemed to enjoy the event so much and that it achieved the goal to bring the community together and raise money for some wonderful causes.

I buy mozzarella at Aspen Marketplace, and it is amazingly delicious. I don't shop at the five places that participated, but I'm surprised Aspen Marketplace wasn't a contestant. Were they invited?
