For a city with many pets—especially dogs—it seems Hoboken can never have enough pet supply stores. Hoboken can now count Hoboken Pet among them.

Located at 524 Washington Street. The store sells several brands of pet food, grooming equipment including shampoos and hair brushes, beds, toys and leashes.

Hoboken Pet is owned and operated by brothers George and Mike DiGuido, along with their brother-in-law Richard Romano. The family has been in business for 31 years and also owns pet supply stores in the Greenpoint, Park Slope and Williamsburg neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

“We were just looking and saw there was a need for a store here that sold bulk items,” Romano said. “We knew that people were going into New York City or the suburbs for more expensive economical items like cat litter.”

Mike DiGuido, who is also a certified pet nutritionist and animal handler, said he and his partners studied the Hoboken market and that they believe they could fill a gap between existing boutiques that sell specialty items and larger outlets usually found in the suburbs.

“Rather than wait for a Petco or PetSmart to come in, we thought we might as well take a shot,” he said. “We want to cater to people so that they don't have to leave Hoboken.”
