NJ Transit Cross-Honoring PATH Tickets On Light Rail
Starting Monday, commuters can use PATH tickets on the Light Rail between Hoboken and Newport stations.
The Port Authority says PATH service from Hoboken Terminal will continue to be suspended for several more weeks, having sustained $300 million in damage.
In the meantime, NJ Transit will accomodate commuters who've been travelling to Newport for PATH trains.
Starting Monday, December 3, riders will be able to use PATH tickets on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail between the Hoboken and Newport stations.
Rides will be free for all Hoboken passengers who get on at 9th Street, 2nd Street or Hoboken Terminal and go directly to Newport.
Mayor Dawn Zimmer said in a statement she hopes it'll "make commutes a little bit easier during this difficult time."
Those who've been bicycling to Newport will also find additional bike parking.
The waterfront walkway that connects Hoboken and Jersey City will be closed this weekend for construction work by Spectra Energy.
A free, 24-hour shuttle service will be provided from Friday at 8 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m. The shuttle will make stops at Hoboken Terminal, 14th Street and Washington Blvd. in Jersey City and the Newport PATH station and run every 20 minutes.

How does one use PATH ticket on Light Rail? Let's say I use Metro-Card... do I just show Metro-Card to a fare officer?

That's all it could be... there still are no turnstiles or swipe slots [italic on]per se[italic off] at HBLRT stations.

I'm guessing this is in response to muggers complaining about fewer victims riding the light rail?

@Dave B, rides are free to all passengers who got on at Hoboken stops (9th Street, 2nd Street and Hoboken Terminal) and go straight to Newport. For PATH riders, it's like swiping once and having access to all stations, rather than paying an extra fee for a Light Rail ticket on top of the PATH swipe.

Did NJ Transit *offer* to do this or did the city ask them to do it?

Where? It's the height of holiday shopping season... they'll need it for cars!

What about cross-honoring from Hoboken to Echange Place as well so people who work downtown can get to work too?

Apparently you can take the Newport Path to JSQ. Transfer at Grove & get to WTC. Inconvenient, sure, but not their problem.

Why do they want to try to cram even more people down into the Newport Station? Cross Honor Hoboken to Exchange Place, too, so people can take the WTC PATH.

I agree, I work downtown and normally get the path from Hoboken to WTC and I would try the light rail/path option if I could go to exchange place not Newport. Currently I have to get the ferry which costs we an extra $58.30 per week
