On The Agenda: Codifying the Charter

Nothing says "summer is over," like a packed city council agenda.

On the long list of resolutions and ordinances for Wednesday night's first regular meeting in weeks, is an ordinance to codify the city's charter.

The charter stems from 1952—59 years ago—and was never codified. A charter is supposed to establish a city and the way its government functions.

The ordinance is sponsored by Councilmen Ravi Bhalla and Peter Cunningham.

A story in the Hudson Reporter on Monday reported that the current version of the charter has been amended to reflect that all terms end in July 2013 (at-large and the mayor) and July 2015 (ward representatives). Originally, the charter stipulated that terms of council members ended in January, following November elections.

The ordinance to codify the charter is on the agenda for first reading, which means that the public will not be able to comment. The matter will be voted on again—after hearing public comment—during the first meeting in September.
