One Mayor in Office, But Five Others Are Still Around

In no point in recent Hoboken history have so many mayors been alive.

This week marks the first anniversary of Hudson County's first female mayor.

But Dawn Zimmer is not the only mayor around:

- Steve Capiello, served from 1973 to 1985. Capiello, 87, made his first public appearance in a long time during the St. Ann's mass last week. In December 2007, Capiello was arrested on DWI charges, according to a Jersey Journal article from that time. In 1985 Capiello was succeeded by Thomas Vezzetti, who died from a heart attack while in office in 1988.

- Pat Pasculli, who was council president at the time of Vezetti's death, was sworn in as acting mayor in 1988 and elected to a full term in 1989. He served until 1993. Pasculli is the president of the Holy Name Society, which is part of the Church of St. Ann.

- Anthony Russo, father of current Third Ward Councilman Michael Russo, served as mayor of the Mile Square from 1993 to 2001. In 2005, Russo was found guilty bribery and mail fraud. He served 30 months in prison and returned to Hoboken in 2007.

- David Roberts served from 2001 to 2008. Roberts was recently reprimanded by the Historic Preservation Society (which is headed by First Ward Councilwoman Theresa Castellano) for painting over a historic sign on the side of a building on Washington and Fourth Streets.

- Peter Cammarano, served for about three weeks in 2009. In April of this year, Cammarano pleaded guilty to bribery and extortion, after he was arrested on July 23, 2009, as part of operation bid rig

At the time of Cammarano's arrest, Zimmer served as council president. After Cammarano resigned, Zimmer was sworn in as acting mayor on Aug. 1, 2009.
