A middle aged Hoboken man crossing the street on Washington between Newark and First was struck by a car around 1 a.m. on Thursday. The victim was conscious as he waited for the ambulance to arrive.

The driver, 38-year-old Pamela Currie from Owing Mills, MD, was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. The car was a red 2008 Nissan Xterra with a Maryland license plates and was traveling south on Washington, hit the man, who is 46.

The driver of the car, a female of whom the identity was still unknown on Thursday morning, was arrested by Hoboken Police for Driving While Intoxicated, according to Director of Public Safety Angel Alicea.

The woman, who appeared drunk, stepped out of the car and completed a sobriety test. There was also a male passenger in the car. Police was still interrogating him on Thursday around 1:30 a.m. It's unclear whether he was intoxicated as well.

If the passenger was in fact sober, Alicea said, he would get fined for allowing a drunk person drive.

According to one eye witness who had just parked his car, the pedestrian flew about seven feet through the air before landing on his left side. There were skit marks on the ground, indicating that the car was speeding, said Alicea.

While the man lay in the middle of Washington Street on his back, one of his shoes had landed about 15 feet away.

At least 12 minutes passed before a Weehawken ambulance arrived to take the man to the hospital. Since the Hoboken Corps is based on volunteers, there are certain times of night when there isn't anyone on duty.

The car was towed and taken to the municipal garage on Observer Highway.

It's still unclear whether Currie was speeding or if she crossed a red light. The case is still under investigation.
