Pommes Frites Sets Up Shop in Hoboken

The shop plans to sell the authentic Belgian fried treats to Hobokenites till 3 a.m.

You will no longer have to hop over to Manhattan to get your Belgian fries fix. Fresh Pommes Frites has officially opened its doors on Washington Street late last week.

The quaint fries shop takes the Belgian traditions of making the fried potatoes, mixes it with a variety of sauces that the shop makes in-house and provides a snack or meal that even the healthiest of Hobokenites a treat they can't resist. Located near the corner of Washington Street and Second Street, the shop has been bustling since it opened at noon on Friday.

"Business has been real good," Pommes Frites manager Alvin Maisonet told Patch. "We've sent out a lot of coupons for free fries, and a lot of people in Hoboken are really taking advantage of it."

But if you don't have a coupon, it'll cost you $4.50 for a regular cone of frites that comes with mayonnaise imported from Belgium, malt vinegar and ketchup free of charge. If you're interested in one of their sauces, it'll cost you $1 for one or 3 different dips for $2.50.

Caryn Crane, who works in educational leadership training, was excited to try the pommes frites for the first time. "I have friends who went to the other one [in New York], but I never did," said Crane, who went with the honey garlic dip for her frites.

Hoboken residents Cheryl Dugas and Mark Ardis also said they never tried the Pommes Frites located across the Hudson in New York's East Village, but were willing to try it out in the Mile Square.

"I just find it intriguing that there is a restaurant devoted to French Fries," said Dugas, who works at Stevens Institute of Technology along with her husband Ardis. "We don't eat [fries] too much for health reasons, but it's one of our special treats."

The idea to open the shop in Hoboken was a chance discovery by owner Chuck Seergy's niece, who saw that location had a lot of potential. "There were locations in Jersey City and New York City that we were scouting, and Hoboken became available," Seergy said. "And she alerted us to it because of the energy of this city and the traffic and the fact it has so many people who are like the people who walk along Second Avenue in New York. It had all the right characteristics: young people, commuters, etc. So we thought it was the right location."

Fresh Pommes Frites also has plans to cater to the post-bar crowd by staying open until 3 a.m. during the week. "We'll be open till 3 a.m., but they will be flexible based on the evening," he said. "Some nights we may close earlier because of traffic, but we really stay open for the bar crowd. If, on their way home, they want a great snack and many people consider the frites a meal. So we're definitely looking to accommodate the bar crowd."

While some might be new to the pommes frites phenomenon, Belle and Bert Regeer have been into them for practically their entire lives. Born and bred in the Netherlands, the food has been a staple in their diets, and they're even happier because the shop makes sure to serve mayonaise with the fries.

"We're Dutch," said Belle, a homemaker. "And this is a staple to Dutch and Belgian culture to eat fries and mayo. So we're excited that we don't have to make them at home anymore and just come here."

Fresh Pommes Frites is located on 207 Washington St.
