The impact of the “Northeast’s Katrina” on New Jersey came into focus with the daybreak on Tuesday, as homeowners, officials and emergency crews surveyed the devastation wrought by the worst storm in the history of the Garden State.

No corner of New Jersey was spared from the wrath of Hurricane Sandy.

Not its fabled coastline, which bore the brunt – and now the scars – of the superstorm. Not its transit system, which officials said suffered “unprecedented devastation.” And certainly not its energy grid, which saw power knocked out to residents of more than 2.5 million homes – 62% of the state.

At least six people died in the storm, including two people crushed by a falling tree in Mendham.

The road to recovery will not be quick or easy, officials warned Tuesday.

“Unthinkable,” is how Gov. Christie described the destruction Sandy brought to the Jersey Shore.
