Schools Celebrate Civil Rights with Annual Parade

Students from Hoboken Charter and other schools marched in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Students from Hoboken Charter and three other schools walked on Friday morning in the 14th to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

The students, who also came from All Saints, Elysian and Stevens Cooperative School, marched along Washington Street from Hoboken Charter, located near Seventh Street, to the steps of City Hall. The Hoboken Police Department closed the south bound lane of traffic for the march.

The students and their teachers carried signs, sang songs and chanted “freedom” and “MLK”.

Once they gathered at City Hall, SK Duff, the Director of Service Learning at Hoboken Charter, addressed the students.

“This march is a metaphor,” Duff said. “It brings to life our history.”

Mayor Dawn Zimmer also spoke to the students.

“We're here today to remember one of the world's most amazing leaders,” Zimmer said. “I'm so proud of all of our students here today.”

The ceremony also included a performance by Hoboken Charter student LaShanda McCallister, who sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” and a motivational speech by Denise Bailey, founder of the non-profit organization Diversity Works.
