Several People Displaced After Fire on 13th Street

A fire at Fox Hill Gardens displaced some residents and caused some minor injuries.

A small fire broke out on the third floor of a senior building at around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon, causing several residents to be evacuated and some minor injuries due to smoke inhalation, according to reports.

When police arrived at the scene—the Hoboken Fire Department was already present—multiple people were standing outside the 10-story building at 311 13th Street. Other residents, standing on their balconies, told police that a fire had broken out on the third floor of the building.

The building—the Fox Hill Gardens senior building—is owned by the Hoboken Housing Authority and, according to police, Executive Director Carmelo Garcia was notified right after the fire started. Garcia could not immediately be reached for comment on Monday morning.

The Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated three people on the scene and two others were transported to the Hoboken University Medical Center for further treatment, police said.

Firemen had to break down the door to one apartment on the fourth floor of the building to make sure there were no residents inside, police said.

A fire inspection of the building was completed around 5 p.m. and handed over back to the Hoboken Housing Authority for clean up efforts.
