Thanks to my new miracle blanket swaddle, I’ve been finally getting enough sleep to try out another class with my newborn.I tried out Megan Avery’s Wednesday Mommy and Me Sewing class, which is where the mom sews while the baby sleeps nearby. Avery is on hand to both assist with the sewing and even pick up the occasional crying child. I had such a great time, and the class is offered every Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Full disclosure: I did take sewing lessons with Megan last year, when my husband got me a gift certificate for six lessons. However, I still ain’t exactly Martha Stewart, and the sewing machine I so eagerly went out and bought is collecting dust and shoved underneath my crib, which come to think about it, is probably not the safest place to store it.
Greeting me as I entered Megan’s store on Willow Avenue and Seventh Street, was a tiny tot who was zooming around the store in one of those mobile exersausers. Her mom stood nearby, and was putting the final touches on an adorable banner she’d sewn in patches to hang across her daughter’s nursery room door. When her baby needed to be fed, Avery was right on hand to help sew on owl eyes to one of the patches.
If you take this series of workshops, you want to arrive with a project in mind. You can start collecting fabric at home, even saving some of your husband’s torn work shirts to cut up into squares for a quilt. My project was a pair of baby booties that I’d started last year and never finished. Megan worked with me and helped me figure out how to sew on Velcro to get the booties to close properly. Like any mom and baby class in Hoboken there is room and time for nursing, feeding, or diaper changing between focusing on the class. Megan is warm and outgoing, and loves kids, so it makes for a pleasant hour spent.
I’ve found there is no greater satisfaction then making something for your new baby that you’ve worked hard on. Slipping the baby booties onto my son’s feet made me proud I figured out how to thread the sewing machine (it only took me about 50 tries!) A baby quilt would make a great first project, as cutting 5 x 8 inch squares and then sewing them all together is fairly easy. I suggest making one for your own baby first, and if you enjoy the workshop, branch out into making one for a friend.
