Incumbent Albio Sires, who has already served three terms in Congress, easily defeated Republican Bayonne councilwoman Maria Karczewski Tuesday night to capture the redistricted 8th Congressional District.
With 100 percent of the precincts counted in both Essex and Hudson counties, Sires had 80 percent of the vote to Karczewski's 15.8 percent.
Sires, the former West New York mayor, previously represented the 13th Congressional District, which was redistricted earlier this year. He spent 12 years in the state Assembly, including four years as Assembly speaker.
In June's primary, he easily trumped Democratic challenger Michael J. Shurin, 25, of Jersey City.
