Snooki and JWoww Won't be Causing Trouble in Hoboken
Hoboken won't be the new Seaside Heights after all. The mayor denied MTV the necessary permit to film in town.
JWoww won't be walking Juice Box on Washington Street this summer.
If you didn't understand half of that sentence, let us rephrase.
Mayor Dawn Zimmer denied MTV the permit it needs to film a possible Jersey Shore spin-off starring the two bustiest cast members: Snooki and JWoww.
In a letter written on Tuesday, Zimmer said that safety and quality of life are the determining reasons for not allowing the permit. Producers met with the city's Film Commission last week, according to the letter. Zimmer also made it clear in the letter that just a verbal agreement is not enough for the show to be filmed in public places.
In other communities, Zimmer wrote, it appeared as if the crew filmed in public spaces without formal permits.
"I write to put you, 495 Productions, MTV and Viacom on formal notice that there will be zero tolerance of this sort of approach in the city of Hoboken," Zimmer wrote.
And that's that. No meatball power in Hoboken this summer.

How about if Snooki & her gang lease the home next to yours? I'd applaud that.
The local economy is a BOGUS argument. Snooki's crew will chase more RESIDENTS out of stores and restaurants than they'll attract tourists. Unlike Cake Boss with a storefront, Snooki's posse will be a moving target, and everywhere they go a media circus and unpleasant for any one who wants to eat or shop wherever they happen to be. One media celebrity is enough. Hoboken residents don't pay the taxes we do to host a show about morons for morons.
Lotsa luck trying to rouse public sentiment on this one. Since you are a knee-jerk rubber stamp for the anti-ZImmer crowd. And calling the mayor a 'bitch' is disrespectful. Are you a male misogynist or a self-hating woman?

Once again our wonderful mayor has killed an opportunity for local businesses to generate some income. Now, don't get me wrong, I am repulsed by the likes of Snooki and crew but the fact is that they are nothing more than a Hollywood stunt with plenty of cash. In case the mayor hasn't noticed, small businesses in town are hurting big time. I guess she wants to make sure that Snooki and company has enough money to buy the diamond bling that hangs from their necks. Afterall, there are certain businesses that the mayor favors.

right on! I owe a business in Hoboken and did sign a contract with 495 to film inside my establishment, and was happy to do so. I know 4 other businesses in the area that also signed up and were all so optimistic. All of us finally thought that we might get a break during this rough economy. This is so unfair to all the businesses in the area, they need all the help they can get, this would of helped tremendously. I think the Mayor should of at least held a town-hall meeting and hear from business owners like myself. I don't know one business owner in Hoboken that was against this, I hope one day that her children or grandchildren own a business and something like this happens to them, karma is a b*tch!

I am a tax paying resident and a business owner, yes one of the businesses that the production company clearly stated would be a show that was nothing like jersey shore. To say this decision was about safety and quality of life is a little dramatic. I have a daughter that walks about town with friends and didnt feel at all that this wouldve been unsafe. I feel that at the very least Hoboken deserved a try. There could've been as many rules and regulations needed to keep them in line. If they didn't abide then they go. But to just get shot down was a real letdown.

The idea that a walking pair of comically out-sized breast implants and her half-pint professional bimbo friend were coming to the land of the 365 day pub crawl to do a show that was "nothing like Jersey Shore" represents a triumph of wishful thinking over common sense.
Did they tell you they were going to review books? Macro economics? Get real jobs? Do you think anyone would even watch them if they weren't getting into bar fights, falling down drunk, and swooning in their all-encompassing narcissism?
They're just moving their act to a new host that they find suitable. I don't really have that strong an opinion about it and leave it to the adminstration & safety officials to do their due diligence. But lets not pretend that these two were selling Hoboken anything new. Their producer would have a stroke.

The decision was an outrage since supporting local business should be job 1 for every elected official especially during these difficult times. The general public doesn't have a clue about business and by doing what the public wants this idiot mayor is just letting the people of hoboken screw themselves since what's good for business is good for Hoboken. Any politician with a brain would have repeated what Laurie wrote and done what's right for our business's and city.
And if we don't have enough cops to handle the opportunities our businesses are entitled to hire more. You don't turn away business because you don't have enough cops - you attract the business and then hire what you need - that's what our taxes are for not for hiring lawyers to drive away opportunities.

Good for the mayor to get these twerps to leave. Now she needs to put her foot down and suspend the liquor licenses on March 3. I pay taxes here, I like my peace and quiet, I like that my kids can enjoy the city. Allowing people to overtake my community is absurd. The mayor needs to be firm and keep everyone out. The bar owners are the greediest scumbags in the world, they care about $$$ and not the residents. When you keep out the garbage, it brings in the big spenders. The meat pack district was once all tranny hookers and junkies and now that it is cleaned up it brings a high end clientele. Hoboken can do the same, just have to be firm about it. What's good for the bars is good for Hoboken because drinking is our life's blood and anything less than $million per year profit for the Pour house is virtual ruination for both that business and our City!!!!
"Since she has effectively killed one on the largest revenue days by dooming the St. Patty's Parade, the least she can do is throw a bone to local business." Of course our other message is that she has effectively done nothing since LepreCon will be even bigger, but the public is stupid and will never notice we're not making sense!!!

I think what's most "disturbing" to some is that our Mayor has the cajones to say "yes" or "no" based on what's best for our City, without selling out for the easy buck.
When she makes strong, decisive decisions like this one, it earns her well-deserved respects from the residents she is protecting and not everyone is going to be happy, but that's ok. Ask Buddy Valastro whether the city supports his business and has a good partner with the City of Hoboken.
It takes a backbone to say no to MTV's checkbook accompanied by roving bands of film crews that wanted 24 hour access to our streets for filming the drunken exploits of Snooki and Jwoww. Mayor Zimmer's decision is both the popular thing and the right thing for our city.
Did she sell Hoboken out to Snooki and MTV? No. She stood tall.

doesn't the mayor think our 50% overstocked police dept can handle anything? they can't handle a parade on a saturday cause of "public safety". they can't handle 2 girls in short skirts cause of "public safety". gotta put gps on a vegetarian food truck to guarantee the safety of the public. watch out bar owners, her next move is to ban all of your businesses and turn them into jewelry stores.
please, all you whiners, move to the suburbs already like pied piper did. i hear totowa is lovely this time of year and there's absolutely no fear of anything interesting every happening there.

Honestly, the only whiners I (or anyone else) see on this blog are you and your other personalities.
You can't get your MTV Snookie people to come invade the town and you are furiously whining, smearing and throwing out any accusation possible to make your whine heard.
Again, it's unfortunate that the general public just doesn't see your vision for this town- what a place it would be!

Why not put your money where your mouth is- have Mason put out a press release asking for Snookie and her enormous cast to come to town.
Just think of all of the 2nd ward residents who would support that initiative.

Last summer drove by the Seaside Jersey Shore house and was amazed at rhe crowd standing out front hoping to follow them to a bar. That house is right off the boardwalk in an area where noise is the normal all summer. We DO have neighborhood's here in Hoboken and yes in the evening you may hear an occasional loud group go by but the point is they walk by they don't hang around for hours in a residential area waiting ... I support this decision, they were looking for property in residential neighborhoods, it would have been very disruptive to residents. I have not spoken to anyone even busjness owners that wanted them to come. Thank you Film Commission and thank youayor for not overriding their decision.

Ach...I could really CARE LESS about this issue. Fine let Snookie play ...throw her out...I don't care and I think a majority of people in town really don't care about this either. What concerns us is the fact that the Mayor Killed the St Patrick's Day Parade. That one really hurt the history and tradition of our community.

The Irish Echo agreed with Mayor Zimmer today and said that the shenanagans surrounding the Hoboken Parade was an insult to Irish Heritage.
As we all know HQ only really cares about finding new ways to attack the Zimmer Administration , :-)

Hobbs..to be honest I could care less about the Zimmer Administration also. Zimmer is gone in '13. We all know that. I just want our nice parade back and I am sad that she killed it. Maybe the new mayor will bring it back. That would be great.

Let me make this simple for you. Just go out on the street right now. Randomly sample any group of 10 Hoboken People you find. I don't care where you find them. Ask them who killed the St Patrick's Day Parade.
Oh. And have a nice day.

So why didn't Mason say anything? No letter/press release about the cancellation of the parade from Mason- nothin?
Have you asked Mason or Russo why they haven't come out against cancelling the parade?
Nah- didn't think so.

thank God Dawn wasn't the mayor when they wanted to film one of the best movies ever, On the Waterfront in Hoboken. i can hear her in that whiney voice telling Marlon Brando, no no no we have to protect the public safety. there'll be crowds and noise and fun and we're banning those things here.

This is a real question, not tongue in cheek...other than the portion of either rent or property taxes paid if they own a building how else do retail business pay taxes to the city? I guess bars pay something each year for a liquor license? Please advise.

This is not something that I think most people in town care about. I've never watched the show, never will and hardly know who these two characters are. With that said, I think with some heavy restrictions, i.e. no filming after a certain hour; vehicles restricted to parking in a certain place, limited use of set lighting and restrictions on street closing might have been a better way for the mayor to handle this. Attracting filming is inconvenient, but good for any city. (I've always thought a film studio in Hoboken on some of our currently zoned as industrial land would be a great idea and would fly in the face of all the developers saying industrial zoning is obsolete.) The cake boss lines are annoying and that show is dumb, but the mayor makes guest appearances. I read somewhere that she was going to let something called parking wars film here...don't know if she did. The issue of safety is completely bogus, if anything more activity is safer than no activity. I also find it funny how many people are hailing the mayor as the strongest, bravest, boldest, bestest mayor ever simply because she denied a permit to a film crew. Conversely, those that think doing this is nothing short of treason are a riot. It was probably a little over-reactive, but that's nothing new. If she made a regular habit out of denying film permits, I'd raise an eyebrow. For now, it's just a - I think it could have been handled better, but so what? Yawn...

Interesting take. Who are the mayor's main handlers? I don't follow things that closely but I've always heard she takes her cues from the former councilman who held her old seat for a while, Michael Lenz.

Mr. Whipple, who "doesn't follow things closely" the only idiots babbling about Michael Lenz STILL are Lane Bajardi, James Barracatto, Krazy Kim Cardinal and Perry Klauseen, all of whom post here under a dizzying array of monikers, including "Mr. Whipple".

Hmmm... not sure if the smarm about 'bravest, boldest, and bestest' is directed at yours truly, but I was thrilled the mayor told Snooki and her vibrator to take a hike.
And no worries, Jabberwock. because the resistance is growing.... the 2 founding members, Curious Gal and OOC, of the 'FREE ELMO Liberation Front' are taking it to the streets.

Did any of you Snooki muff divers morons know that "What Would You Do with John Quinones of ABC News has filmed in Hoboken - several times in the past year? Here is a link to one fo the several story lines they shot recently. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/02/stealing-from-the-homeless-are-you-for-real/
There are plenty of filming oppotunities that dont need 24 hour filming rights. MTV is free to re submit a less agressive appplication. If they toned down what they wanted and had not adivsed the Mayot that used money to grease some approvals in Seaside, they stand a decent chance of being able to be film in Hoboken. Also, what the eff about the Manzo brothers? Enough with the faux outrage from the Axis of Stupid.

So, khoboken, are you saying that bribes were paid in Seaside? I'd like you to be clear. I'm sure the officials in that town would be interested in seeing your post. Hopefully they have good lawyers and even better vacation planners to spend the money they would win should they decide to sue you.
Don't defend your Dictator Mayor at the expense of others.

OCC you out of control illiterate shrew. Read the mayor's letter. The idiot from MTV admitted as much. He is free to re apply and scale down the request. Plenty of other filmmakers seem to be able to get permtis just fine in town. And I dont care about what lawyers or other things Seaside has. Dont go there, never have and never will. God, you are such an insufferable windbag. And for asshats that dont see the difference between promoting a 100 year old institution like Carlo's over tits and ass with an occassional beaver flash, then to quote some other poster, I hope that you are the stupidest person in your family. Like the mayor is goign to do body shots with Snooki and her amazon friend with the two Hindenberg implants and commisserate about breaking her vagina bone. This has to be the least intelligent thread ever.
