Sources: City Director Allegedly Involved in Assault in front of City Hall

The director and a driver of the Hop allegedly got into a fight. Both men were arrested, sources say.

According to multiple sources, the city's Director of Parking and Transportation Ian Sacs got into an altercation with one of his employees on Thursday morning in front of the steps of City Hall.

Sacs and Bill Laney, who drives the Hop—the city's bus service—were broken up by Hoboken police and both men were arrested, said one source who saw the incident happen around 9:25 a.m. Nobody seemed to be injured.

According to a source, Sacs had taken the keys to the Hop from Laney. According to multiple sources, Sacs was charged with harassment, theft of movable property and driving a bus without a cdl license and Laney was charged with simple assault.

Around 2:30 p.m., Mayor Dawn Zimmer responded to the incident through a statement.

"According to several eye witness accounts, Director Sacs was attacked today by a City employee inside City Hall," Zimmer said in the statement. "While I believe Director Sacs is the victim of workplace violence, I am calling for an independent 3rd party to thoroughly review this matter." The statement further announced that "the alleged attacker has been suspended without pay pending further investigation."

The case will proceed through the municipal courts outside of Hoboken.

The director was not immediately available for comment, nor were police officials.

"This is embarrassing for the city," one source said. "I walked away from it."
