'Tis the Season for Holiday Drinks

This is our favorite time for drinking.

While there’s nothing like cracking open a cold one on a sweltering summer day, it has been scientifically proven (by me) that the winter holiday season is the best time of the year for drinking. Craft breweries put out their seasonal ales, Hot Toddy’s are suddenly on the menu everywhere, and it’s the one time of the year when you can enjoy a 3,000-calorie eggnog drink without feeling too guilty. Okay, but you should probably get to a gym and work that off, though.

Baby, it’s cold outside, so maybe you should get yourself to a bar and enjoy some of these fine limited-edition holiday drinks:

The Wicked Wolf

These are the type of drink menus that I love—crazy holiday drinks at a cool $10 price each. Their Candy Cane Martini is rimmed with candy cane dust, and is made with vanilla vodka, peppermint Schapps and club soda. The Christmas Cosmo is citrus vodka, lime, cranberry juice, Cointreau, and is garnished with fresh cranberries. For naughty drinkers, the Grinch is made with Midori, lemon juice, simple syrup and is topped with a cherry. The White Christmas, made with amretto, heavy cream and vodka is sort of their spiced up version of a Black Russian. And finally, if you’re really ready to indulge, the Smore’s Martini is Godiva chocolate, vanilla vodka, butterscotch Schnapps and a dash of cream, with a rim lined with Marshmallow Fluff and crushed graham crackers.

Pilsener Haus Biergarten

Hoboken’s first biergarten already boasts an impressive list of import and craft beers, so why wouldn’t they pull out the stops for their limited edition holiday offerings? Anchor Christmas Ale is a deep amber ale with spices, toasted malts and a slight hop bitterness ($6). Southampton Imperial Porter is a Baltic-style porter with notes of chocolate, caramel and toffee ($6). Victory Yakima Glory has hops from Washington and deep flavored malts, which altogether Pilsener Haus describes as giving the beer ‘a warming edge” ($8). The Firestone Walker 10 (the number refers to the ABV percentage, which means, it will get you feeling loose and ready to sing Mariah Carey Christmas songs) is a blend of of barleywine, imperial stout, imperial brown and double IPA ($8).

The Melting Pot

Alright, so these aren’t exactly holiday-only drinks, but they are perfect in their own right for chilly weather drinking. Also, this is probably the only place in Hoboken where you can get a cauldron of hot melted cheese with your drink. Beer-wise, I was actually pretty impressed with Melting Pot’s unique craft offerings (I mean, it’s a nationwide fondue chain). The Schneider Aventinus is a dark brew with flavors of caramel, molasses and cloves ($11). Wells Banana Bread is a dark amber beer that somehow takes on the flavor of buttery banana bread, with hints of vanilla ($8). Young’s Double Chocolate Stout has the flavors of milk chocolate, coffee and roasted malts ($8). Cocktail-wise, they offer a Chocolate Martini ($13), made with vanilla vodka, Godiva liqueur, Kahlua, Baileys, white crème de cacao, and all topped with a chocolate swirl. I told you this wasn’t the time to be worried about your waistline.

If you’re into staying in and mixing up your own drinks (where you can be very liberal in your pour), our pals at EatDrinkHoboken rounded up a bunch of holiday martini recipes.

Or you can just mix up a batch of The Bar Hopper’s favorite holiday drink—cheap supermarket eggnog and shots of Jameson, mixed in a mason jar and garnished with a still-wrapped candy cane. Sip it as you ponder buying gifts for your friends and family, but ultimately get way too lazy and watch “Die Hard” all day.

Happy holidays!
