Weddings Celebrated & Weddings Planned
Here's what you missed on Monday night's new episode.
“It's a very special week for us at Carlo's,” Buddy says as the latest new episode of Cake Boss begins. It's Grace and Joey's 20th wedding anniversary. Cut to an old photo of a teenage Buddy with his arm around his sister and Joey. Grace looks pretty, Joey is growing what looks to be a late 1980's style mullet, and Buddy has two racoons pasted over his eyes. Oh wait, those are his eyebrows.
“When Joey came into the family I was probably 12 years old,” Buddy says. “When I was a kid I looked up to him.”
Joey says that he is going to surprise Grace by recreating their original wedding cake, one designed by Buddy's father. It's a multi-tier cake that is both square and round and looks like a church.
These church cakes used to be a Carlo's staple. “We haven't done one in years, “ Buddy says. “I just hope we still got what it takes.” Cut to more photos of him as a teenager with those bushy brows.
Back at the bakery, Madeline, Grace and Madeline's friend Daniela are talking about the birthday party Madeline is throwing for her son Buddy C. It's a coed pool party, and Daniela's daughter Nicole will be there. Apparently she's Buddy C.'s girlfriend. They've already gone on a date to the movies.
“We've been planning this since they were in kindergarten,” Madeline says. “We want each other as in-laws,” Daniela says. Take that, Match.com, Buddy's mom already has his whole dating life planned.
We then see Buddy C. negotiating with his father about what the cake for the party will look like. Mauro says he thinks his son is too young to have a girlfriend. “It's like I'm doing a cake for Don Juan,” Mauro says.
“I don't want you coming to the party with the cake not correct,” Buddy C. tells his father. Wow, one date and he's already growing cajones. “Are you paying for the cake?” Mauro asks. “You gonna get whatever I give you, how about that?” End of discussion.
Mauro instructs the crew about the cake. It will show a pool party with figurines of Buddy C. and his friends. “Don't make the girls too hot, he gets excited over that.” Mauro says.
Meanwhile, Big Buddy and Joey finish the church cake at the factory. “You don't realize how fast 20 years goes,” Joey says. “I grew a lot of pounds,” Mauro, standing nearby says. “Lost a lot of hair.”
Back at Carlo's, Grace hatches a surprise for Joey. She's going to put on her old wedding dress. “He'll be shocked when he sees me,” she says. Cut to more photos of Grace and Joey's wedding. Mauro really did have more hair back then.
Mary and Lisa help their sister squeeze into the wedding gown. Great, this is an exercise with real potential for positive reinforcement, trying to squeeze into a form-fitting gown after 20 years, multiple kids and a lifetime working inside a bakery.
After some struggling the sisters finally zip it up all the way. Hey, it still fits. “Can you breathe?” Lisa asks. “Not really,” Grace says.
Grace walks into the back. “Joe,” she squeals. “Happy anniversary!” Joe turns around, does a double take and on shock mutters some unprintable words. “You look really good,” he tells his wife. “Now I remembered why I married you.” Smart words from a man who's survived 20 years with a ball and chain.
Later, Mauro delivers his son's cake to the party. There, Madeline, Daniela and Buddy's wife Lisa talk about Buddy C. taking Nicole to the movies. They ask Nicole about it and learn that she bought the tickets. Madeline says she's going to “get” her son for not paying. Well done, Buddy C., for getting a sugar mama (Or, boo, hiss, depending on whoever is reading this).
Buddy C. goes to cut the cake. “What a second,” his mom says to Daniela. “Isn't Nicole going to feed him the first piece of cake?”
Buddy C. begins to protest. “You're getting fed by a girl, just shut up and eat it,” Mauro says. Again, more smart words from a marriage veteran.
Nicole feeds Buddy C., and he returns the favor. Madeleine and Daniela giddily hug each other and wait for the real thing to happen in 15 years.
Then, as the episode ends, Buddy and the family wait with the church cake to surprise Grace. She and Joey enter the house and everyone yells surprise.
Grace is excited. “I loved this cake then and I love this cake now,” she says. She and Joey cut the cake together and feed each other.
“It's been a really great anniversary,” Grace says. Here's to their 20th, and many more. And the next time Buddy bakes a church cake maybe it will be for his namesake nephew and his childhood sweetheart.
