Cake Boss Recap

Buddy Bakes the Heisman; plus, Mauro Gets a Tat

Here's what you missed on Monday night's new episode.

As the latest episode of Cake Boss begins, Buddy goes on the Dan Patrick radio show to discuss the cake Nissan wants him to make to celebrate their sponsorship of the Heisman Trophy, the award given to college football's best player. Patrick, the snarky former Sportscenter anchor, is one of the Heisman voters. He's got the iconic trophy right in front of Buddy. Buddy says he's going to make a cake of the trophy so authentic that Patrick won't be able to tell the difference. “No flowers," Patrick says. "Don't screw up the cake Buddy.” Hold on, hasn't this guy seen Buddy's highlight reel? He's the Barry Sanders of bakers. Back at the Lackawanna factory Buddy welcomes Marissa, winner of the Cake Boss contest spinoff show Next Great Baker. Her…

Here's what you missed on the second season finale of the Cake Boss spin-off.

Finally, the finale of the Cake Boss contest spinoff show Next Great Baker! Thirteen baker wannabes whittled to three and now down to one rising star. The surviving trio includes cocky Ryan, feisty Marissa and demure Nadine. “Nadine's great at piping and detail,” Marissa says. “Ryan's not that great of a baker. I can't even stand him. I don't want to look at him, I don't want to hear his voice.” Get those two lovebirds a room! Buddy enters. He's confident his next great baker is in the kitchen. The winner will get to work with him at Carlo's, plus receive $100,000 and a four page spread in Brides magazine, which is how Buddy first got recognized. For their baker's challenge the contestants have to break as many eggs as they can into a …

I don't think Marissa should have won. She complained all the time and was always like " poor me".She was mean to Ryan and a bunch of other people on the show and I have no idea why Buddy picked her. I think he will regret that later. Ryan was right if Buddy knew the real her he wouldn't want to work with him. Nadine was a great baker and she defenitly should have won. Nadine has way more talent …   more ›

Artist and Model Collaborate on New Museum Exhibit

The exhibit, entitled Mostly Rosemary, explores ethnic identity.

Upstairs at the Hoboken Historical Museum is a new exhibit of four paintings, one each of three women and one man, all of who represent a different ethnicity. But there's a catch. All four paintings are of the same person. The exhibit, entitled Mostly Rosemary, opened Sunday and shows the work of Hoboken based painter Laura Alexander. An award-winning artist who has shown her work in New York and abroad, Alexander also earned a fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in 2006. Alexander, who has worked out of her studio in the Monroe Center since 1991, said she spent two years on the project. First she took several photographs of a model named Rosemary Gonzalez, who with the use of different makeup, wigs, outfits and facial…

Everyday Hoboken in Daily Photos

Photographer Peter Ziebel publishes photos of the city on his daily blog King Nopa.

Hoboken residents can challenge themselves to a game whenever they visit Peter Ziebel's daily photo blog King Nopa. They can look at the over 1,000 images of nondescript buildings on the site and guess where they are located in the city. Ziebel spoke about his photo project last week at the Hudson School as part of the school's monthly film and lecture series for adults entitled Think Thursdays. A professional photographer and author, Ziebel is also the photography teacher at the Hudson School. Wanting to examine urban landscapes, Ziebel has taken and published a new photo to the website every day since the first on April 7, 2009, with the only exception of missing five days while being sick with pneumonia. He said the project involves …

Happy Ten Years: Buddy and Lisa Renew Their Vows

Here's what you missed on Monday night's new episode of Cake Boss.

Buddy sure was busy Monday night, with both the penultimate episode of his contest show Next Great Baker, and the season five premiere of Cake Boss. Not only is Buddy busy at the bakery, but this is the week he's renewing his marriage vows with Lisa for their tenth anniversary. They're going to do it on a cruise to the Bahamas, and the whole family is coming. Of course Buddy's going to bake for the wedding. “This week I bake the best cake of my life,” he says. But he's having a tough time coming up with a design, which he compares to writer's block. “I got cake block,” he says. Flaubert had that too. Buddy and two of his employees try designs using Styrofoam cake forms. They're the nude mannequins of the baking world. He's thinking about …

Next Great Baker: A Cake for Miss USA (a Jersey Girl!)

Here's what you missed on the latest new episode of the Cake Boss spin-off.

We're down to the final four in the Cake Boss contest spinoff Next Great Baker. As the new episode opens Buddy greets Chad, Marissa, Nadine and Ryan in the kitchen and has them shape modeling chocolate roses for their baker's challenge. “It's one of the things that I'm known for,” he says. “If you want to work with me at Carlo's you better know how to make a sugar flower.” Buddy demonstrates. It's like watching Ray Lewis supervise a tackling drill. None of the contestants have ever really done this before. Somehow rugged Ryan finishes but dainty Nadine does not. Buddy declares Ryan the winner. Ryan's nemesis Marissa is pissed. Those two are really perfecting their contentious Tony and Carmela Soprano dynamic. During a succession of …

The Metal's Too Heavy on Next Great Baker

Here's what you missed on the latest new episode of the Cake Boss spin-off.

We're down to six bakers on the Cake Boss contest spinoff Next Great Baker. As the new episode opens Monday night, Buddy reminds the contestants that they're only two weeks away from the finale. “This is where I want to see your fire,” he says. For their baker's challenge the contestants have to do a kitchen triathlon. Against the clock they'll have to stock Buddy's kitchen with nine 50lb. bags of sugar, scoop 35lbs. of flour by hand and then frost a tray of cupcakes. It would be extremely polite to say that most of these contestants do not look athletic. Ryan is loading the sugar bags, and he's hurtin'. “I think I'm going to die,” he wheezes. Marissa says he needs to get...um, some of those round things found in sports. Then it's Megan's …

Jubilee Center Launches Performing Arts Series

The safe haven for under-served children celebrated Martin Luther King with a show on Friday night.

Children from the Jubilee Center staged the first of what they plan to be a regular performing arts series last Friday night at All Saints Episcopal Church. The first show honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and featured students reciting King's most famous speeches, presenting their own original poems, dancing and singing songs. The series is part of what the Jubilee Center, a safe haven for under-served children, calls its new Arts in Academics "experiment". New Jubilee Center Executive Director Armstead Johnson had the idea to build upon what the children learn in school and help the center “create a culture of educational excellence.” “We think practicing fine arts might loosen up the kids' brains so that they're more confident to do …

Stories for Kids from the Old County

Husband and wife Mike and Zita Nececkas translate Hungarian fairy tales into English.

Hoboken resident Zita Nececkas has always wanted to share the fairy tales she heard growing up in Hungary with her American born husband Mike. She's also hoped the stories could help him learn her native language. “These are the stories my mom read to me when I was young,” she said. She looked for books online, but wasn't satisfied with the translations she found. So last year Zita, 31, decided to translate a story herself, a lullaby. She enjoyed the project enough to translate a second story and more. Now, together with Mike, 31, the husband and wife regularly publish children's books under their Kormol Books label. The couple translate classic Hungarian fairy tales into English, add illustrations, package everything into ebook files and …

Next Great Baker: Somehow, More Crying

Here's what you missed on the latest new episode of the Cake Boss spin-off.

The latest episode of the Cake Boss spinoff Next Great Baker was very emotional. Lots of tempers flaring. Lots of passion. And a grown man cried. A lot. Somehow the new episode Monday night had even more emotion, as the contestants had to placate the bride from hell. First, Buddy challenges the bakers on their piping skills. “Back to the basics,” he says. “What I was born and bred on.” He gives them a flawless demonstration. It's like watching Picasso paint. Expectant mom Heather is excited.  Whatever the baking skill involved, it always seems like half the contestants have never done it before. Carmelo has never piped before, and neither has Ryan. How are these people on the show? It's like someone trying to make the majors without ever …

I think there is a boy's club at Carlo's. Ryan didn't lead, he bullied. Marissa pulled more information out of Maria and got them going down the right track. Secondly, Carmelo was a horrible leader. At least Heather tried to calm Maria. Why, when Heather was given a job was it considered busy work? How is cutting out stars any different than coloring fondant the wrong color and having to redo it…   more ›
