The Cake Boss is more than just canolis. Valastro is reportedly opening up a restaurant in Las Vegas.
Buddy "Cake Boss" Valastro is about to get lucky in Vegas. Hoboken's most famous pastry chef is opening up a restaurant in the Palazzo Hotel there, according to the Las Vegas Sun. Valastro will open up an Italian restaurant — titled Buddy V's — this Fall, the newspaper reported on Wednesday. "Buddy promises that the menu at his new restaurant Buddy V’s will feature 'beloved recipes passed down by my mother, grandmother and aunts,'" according to the Las Vegas Sun. It's not the first time Valastro is stepping away from sweets to focus on savory dishes, in 2011 the Cake Boss hosted a cooking show.

The new restaurant has signs up in the former Hummus Bar location.
The spark of falafel and hummus restaurants in Hoboken seems to be winding down. Hummus Bar, which was located at Seventh and Washington Streets, has closed its doors. According to signage in the store front, an Indian restaurant by the name of Hoboken Dhaba will move in soon. Hummus Bar isn't the only falafel place that has closed down in the past year. Maoz Falafel as well as Ibby's Falafel both closed their doors. (Mamoun's at Fifth and washington Streets is still open.)

Bwe Kafe is now open on Washington Street.
Although it has barely been two weeks, Bwe Kafe already has regular customers. Bwe Kafe, which is being managed by brother-sister team Dale and Evan Ryan, opened two weeks ago at Tenth and Washington Streets. With most of Hoboken's coffeeshops located downtown, Bwe Kafe is looking to fill the uptown need for caffeine between 5:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. Part of the proceeds from Bwe Kafe — which means "to drink coffee" in Haitian Creole — will go toward non profits involved in re-building Haiti since the earthquake. For example, said Dale, 26, the coffeeshop buys coffee from La Colombe, a company that uses coffeebeans from Haiti. Dale and Evan's mother — who is also the landlord of the space — started the non profit Love for Haiti The proceeds …

A proposal to turn the available into a tech incubator failed on first reading on Wednesday night.
A new law that would turn the vacant Sinatra Cafe into a tech hub failed on first reading on Wednesday night. The proposal first came up in the Fall of 2012, when the city allowed NJ Tech, Inc. to leaset he space for at least three months, in an effort of making the space a technological center in Hoboken. A permanent law to do that failed on first reading, which means that it has to go back to the drawing board and won't be heard for second reading at the next city council meeting. The space at Frank Sinatra Park has traditionally been a cafe. Most recently it was occupied by The Crepe Grill, which shuttered its doors last year. Councilwoman Theresa Castellano previously said she prefers the space to be utilized as a cafe or concession …

A resolution on Wednesday night's agenda failed in a 4-4 vote.
Multiple votes about the city's finances failed in a 4-4 stalemate on Wednesday night, with the two sides of the City Council hurling insults at each other for multiple hours. Temporary appropriations to cover the cost of the city failed, to pay for the city's costs through the month of June. The council minority — mayoral opponents Theresa Castellano, Beth Mason, Michael Russo and Tim Occhipinti — voted against the appropriations, saying they want the city council to pass the full budget instead. A vote to amend the 2013 budget also failed, because the minority said it meant a tax increase for the city of Hoboken. The majority council members, however — David Mello, Ravi Bhalla, Jennifer Giattino and Council President Peter Cunningham — …

Hoboken resident Jason Scherr is one of the three masterminds behind Echo, an app that detects where you are and tells you more about what's going on.
If you're ever at Mulligans on a Friday night and want to communicate with other patrons — on your cell phone, of course — there's a new Hoboken-centric app that will help you do just that. Echo, which zeroes in on a specific location and offers more information about it, was developed in Hoboken by three young entrepreneurs. "It's a simple way to communicate with people who are in the same place," Jason Scherr, one of the three members of the Echo team, said late last week. Echo, which is free in the app store, is based on "geofencing," Scherr explained, which means that it automatically detects where you are and creates a digital fence around that. So, rather than pulling in information from other nearby places like Jersey City and New …

Estimated 400,000 people expected in region; team practices to be held in Florham Park and Media Day in Newark
The 2014 Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium is expected to have a $550 million economic impact on New Jersey and New York, with an estimated 400,000 people in the region, according to a report on dailyrecord.com. Businesses should start preparing for the flood of visitors now, according to speakers at The Big Game Huddle, an informational and networking event held Wednesday at Raritan Valley Country Club. “Start the celebration now,” said Wayne Hasenbalg, president and chief executive officer of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority. “You don’t have to wait until the week before the game," he told the dailyrecord.com. That impact will be felt in North and Central Jersey, as one of the competing teams will practice at the Atlantic …

Residents hope to keep the uptown summer hang out open to the public.
A group of residents is petitioning the Hoboken Planning Board to keep Pier 13 open in uptown Hoboken this summer. The matter was expected to be heard at the monhtly planning board meeting on Tuesday night. Residents are invited to fill out an online petition. "Pier 13 is a unique space that appeals to Hoboken families and young professionals looking to relax, grab lunch/dinner/drinks and enjoy the waterfront and city skyline," the petition states. "There just isn’t any place like it in Hoboken to meet old friends and make new ones." Pier 13 opened last year as the uptown answer to Pier A Park, including outdoor drinking and space for food trucks. Local blog HobokenGirl called Pier 13 "basically the best thing in Hoboken." More than 900 …

The city council is still expected to vote on the matter, but on May 15.
Hobokenites who live by the downtown waterfront can sleep tight. For at least two more weeks. While the city council was planning to consider a noise waiver on Wednesday night for construction of a new waterfront development, the vote has been postponed until May 15. The public is invited to attend the council meeting on May 15, to hear the developer's — SJP Properties — reasons for the need of a waiver. If granted, construction work would be allowed to continue on Saturdays, something that is not allowed under the city's noise ordinance.
